HERE POPE FIRST SUNG O hallow'd TreeA
Such is the boast thy bark displaysB
Thy branches like thy Patron's laysB
Shall ever ever sacred beA
Nor with'ring storm nor woodman's strokeC
Shall harm the POET'S favourite OakC
-
'Twas HERE he woo'd his MUSE of fireD
While Inspiration's wond'rous artE
Sublimely stealing thro' his heartE
Did Fancy's proudest themes inspireF
'Twas HERE he wisely learnt to smileG
At empty praise and courtly guileG
-
Retir'd from flatt'ring specious artsH
From fawning sycophants of stateI
From knaves with ravag'd wealth elateI
And little SLAVES with TYRANT HeartsH
In conscious freedom nobly proudJ
He scorn'd the envious grov'ling crowdJ
-
Tho' splendid DOMES around them riseK
And pompous TITLES lull to restL
Each strugg'ling Virtue in the breastL
'Till POW'R the place of WORTH suppliesK
The wretched herd can never knowM
The sober joys these haunts bestowM
-
Does the fond MUSE delight to dwellN
Where freezing Penance spreads its shadeO
When scarce the Sun's warm beams pervadeO
The hoary HERMIT'S dreary cellN
Ah no THERE Superstition blindP
With torpid languor chills the mindP
-
Or does she seek Life's busy sceneQ
Ah no the sordid mean and proudJ
The little trifling flutt'ring crowdJ
Can never taste her bliss sereneQ
She flies from Fashion's tinsel toysR
Nor courts her smile nor shares her joysR
-
Nor can the dull pedantic mindP
E'er boast her bright creative firesS
Above constraint her wing aspiresS
Nor rigid spells her flight can bindP
The narrow track of musty schoolsT
She leaves to plodding VAPID FOOLST
-
To scenes like THESE she bends her wayU
HERE the best feelings of the soulV
Nor interest taints nor threats controulV
Nor vice allures nor snares betrayU
HERE from each trivial hope remov'dW
Our BARD first sought the MUSE he lov'dX
-
Still shall thy pensive gloom diffuseY
The verse sublime the dulcet songZ
While round the POET'S seat shall throngZ
Each rapture sacred to the MUSEA2
Still shall thy verdant branches beA
The bow'r of wond'rous minstrelsyA2
-
When glow worms light their little firesA2
The am'rous SWAIN and timid MAIDO
Shall sit and talk beneath thy shadeO
AS EVE'S last rosy tint expiresA2
While on thy boughs the plaintive DOVEB2
Shall learn from them the tale of LOVEB2
-
When round the quiv'ring moon beams playU
And FAIRIES form the grassy ringC2
'Till the shrill LARK unfurls his wingC2
And soars to greet the blushing dayU
The NIGHTINGALE shall pour to THEEA
Her Song of Love lorn MelodyA
-
When thro' the forest dark and drearU
Full oft as ancient stories sayU
Old HERNE THE HUNTER i loves to strayU
While village damsels quake with fearU
Nor sprite or spectre shall invadeO
The still repose that marks THY shadeO
-
BLEST OAK thy mossy trunk shall beA
As lasting as the LAUREL'S bloomD2
That deck's immortal VIRGIL'S tombD2
And fam'd as SHAKSPERE'S hallow'd TreeA
For every grateful MUSE shall twineE2
A votive Wreath to deck THY SHRINEE2
