Stanzas To Time Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD ECCCFBFB GCGCHIHI DFDFCJCK

CAPRICIOUS foe to human joyA
Still varying with the fleeting dayB
With thee the purest raptures cloyA
The fairest prospects fade awayB
Nor worth nor pow'r thy wings can bindC
All earthly pleasures fly with THEED
Inconstant as the wav'ring windC
That plays upon the summer seaD
-
I court thee not ungentle guestE
For I have e'er been doom'd to findC
Life's gayest hours but idly drestC
With sweets that pall the sick'ning mindC
When smiling HOPE with placid mienF
Around my couch did fondly playB
Too oft thy a ry form I've seenF
On DOWNY pinions glide awayB
-
But when perplex'd with pain or careG
My couch with THORNS was scatter'd roundC
When the pale priestess of DESPAIRG
My mind in fatal spells had boundC
When the dull hours no joy could bringH
No bliss my weary fancy proveI
I mark'd thy leaden pond'rous wingH
With TARDY pace unkindly moveI
-
IF SUCH THY GIFTS O Time for theeD
My sated heart shall ne'er repineF
I bow content to FATE'S decreeD
And with thy thorns thy roses twineF
Yet e'er thy fickle reign shall endC
The balmy sweets of FRIENDSHIP'S hourJ
I'll with my cup of sorrow blendC
And smile REGARDLESS OF THY POW'RK
