The following little Poems are written after the Model of the Old English Ballads and are inscribed to those who admire the simplicity of that kind of versificationA
-
-
NEAR GLARIS on a mountain's sideB
Beneath a shad'wy woodC
With walls of ivy compass'd roundD
An ancient Castle stoodC
-
By all rever'd by all ador'dE
There dwelt a wealthy dameF
One peerless daughter bless'd her ageG
A maid of spotless fameF
-
While one fair son a gallant boyH
Whose VIRTUE was his shieldI
Led on the dauntless sons of warJ
Amidst the crimson'd fieldI
-
For o'er the land dissension reign'dK
Full many a direful yearL
And many a heart's best blood had stain'dK
The proud oppressor's spearL
-
Young ELLA'S charms had spread her fameF
O'er all the country wideB
And youths of high descent and braveM
Had sought her for their brideB
-
Amongst the rest SIR RAYMOND cameF
Sprung from a princely raceN
Right valiant in each warlike artO
And blest with ev'ry graceN
-
In tournaments renown'd afarP
For manly feats admir'dQ
His brilliant fame his bold exploitsR
The damsel's bosom fir'dQ
-
Her blushing cheek her down cast eyeS
Her secret flame confess'dT
The gallant RAYMOND'S circling armU
The beauteous ELLA press'dT
-
From her fond mother's doating eyesV
The radiant gem he boreJ
The weeping maids and village swainsV
Beheld her charms no moreJ
-
Where the swift billows of the RHINEA
Their shining curls discloseV
With many a gilded turret crown'dD
His splendid Palace roseV
-
The festive scene had scarce beganA
When near the Castle wallW
A messenger of warlike meinA
On RAYMOND'S name did callW
-
Come forth thou valiant Knight he saidX
Thy prowess quickly showY
With speed prepare thy lance and shieldI
To meet the dauntless foeY
-
The blood of many a noble SwissV
Doth stain the country roundD
And many a brave aspiring youthZ
Lies vanquish'd on the groundD
-
The daring Chief whose shining spearL
With purple gore is dy'dB
Oh direful news prepare to meetA2
THE BROTHER OF THY BRIDEB
-
Enrag'd the haughty RAYMOND criedB
Base wretch receive thy doomB2
For thy bold errand thou shalt dieS
Within a dungeon's gloomB2
-
Speechless the mournful ELLA stoodC
Despair her heart did woundD
When from the echoing tow'r she heardQ
Th' larum bell's dreadful soundD
-
Her cold wan cheek her quiv'ring lipC2
Bespoke her soul's deep woeY
From her blue eye the crystal dropD2
In silent grief did flowY
-
For shame shake off those woman's tearsV
The frowning bridegroom criedB
And know SIR RAYMOND'S warlike breastT
Disdains a timid brideB
-
In vain you weep ignoble dameF
Behold yon neighing steedE2
My soldiers wait my bosom burnsV
TO CONQUER or to BLEEDE2
-
Forth went the Knight the frantic brideB
To the high rampart flewF2
With trembling knee she climb'd the wallW
Th' embattled plain to viewF2
-
On either side by turns she thoughtG2
Proud vict'ry grac'd the fieldI
'Till vanquish'd by her BROTHER'S swordE
She saw her HUSBAND yieldI
-
For refuge to his Castle gateH2
The bleeding warrior flewF2
And from the battlements on highS
His daring gauntlet threwF2
-
Three days from dawn to setting sunA
The hardy soldiers stoodC
'Till faint with toil by famine press'dT
They saw their chief subdu'dI2
-
Oh haste my page SIR RAYMOND saidX
The captive youth set freeJ2
And bid him to the conqu'rer's feetA2
This message bear from meJ2
-
Treasures immense of massy goldK2
Rich gems and jewels rareL2
As ransom will I freely giveM2
If he our lives will spareL2
-
If he consents let garlands greenA
His peaceful brows adornA
If hostile yet beneath our wallsV
Thrice sound his bugle hornA
-
Gaily he pass'd the outward gateH2
But sadly he return'dN2
His bugle horn he sounded thriceV
No wreath his brows adorn'dO2
-
Thy gold he cried the conqu'ror scornsV
He claims thy forfeit LIFEP2
Thy precious gems and jewels rareL2
He gives thy beauteous wifeP2
-
Your lands are free your soldiers tooF2
And for young ELLA'S sakeQ2
To prove his truth the gen'rous chiefR2
This solemn vow did makeQ2
-
That whatsoe'er she holds most dearL
At morrow's dawn of dayS2
Her pages to some distant placeV
May safely bear awayS2
-
At dawn of light fair ELLA cameF
Fresh as the rose of MayS2
SIR RAYMOND in a chest of goldK2
Her pages bore awayS2
-
She pass'd the gate with throbbing heartO
She pass'd the ranks amongT2
The praises of her peerless charmsV
Fell fast from ev'ry tongueT2
-
Halt halt they cried right noble dameF
'Tis fit we should beholdK2
Whether thy coffer ought containsV
But gems and messy goldK2
-
O stay me not ye gallant youthsV
For soon it shall appearL
This burnish'd coffer doth containA
ALL THAT I HOLD MOST DEARL
-
Take heed my Brother ah take heedE2
Nor break thy sacred wordQ
Nor let thy kinsman's blood degradeU2
The glories of thy swordE
-
The Hero smil'd fair ELLA'S cheekV2
Glow'd with vermilion dyeS
Fear chill'd her heart the starting tearL2
Stood trembling in her eyeS
-
Subdu'd abash'd her brother flewF2
And clasp'd her to his breastT
Then with an angel's pitying voiceV
The vanquish'd chief address'dT
-
Come forth SIR RAYMOND valiant knightW2
Behold thy peerless wifeP2
Receive thy sword and from HER handX2
Accept thy forfeit lifeP2
-
Here shall the bloody contest endY2
Let peace o'erspread the landX2
More homage than the conqueror's swordE
CAN BEAUTY'S TEARS COMMANDX2
