Can pierce the pulses of the heart | A |
Can force the treasur'd tear to flow | B |
In prodigality of woe | B |
Or lure each jocund bliss to birth | C |
Amid the sportive bow'rs of mirth | C |
LAURA DIVINE I call thee now | D |
To yonder promontory's brow | D |
That props the skies while at its feet | E |
With fruitless ire the billows beat | E |
There let my fainting sense behold | F |
Those sapphire orbs their heaven unfold | F |
While from thy lips vermilion bow | D |
Sweet melody her shafts shall throw | B |
Yet do not do not yield delight | G |
Nor with dear visions bless my sight | G |
- | |
Grant me despair thou mightiest Muse | H |
O'er the vast scene thy spells diffuse | I |
And with a mad terrific strain | J |
Conjure up demons from the main | J |
Storms upon storms indignant heap | K |
Bid Ocean howl and Nature weep | K |
'Till the Creator blush to see | L |
How horrible His World can be | L |
While I will glory to blaspheme | M |
And make the joys of hell my theme | M |
Hah check this frenzy spare my soul | N |
O'er my parch'd cheek soft sorrows roll | N |
Subdue this vain impassion'd rage | O |
An atom's energies assuage | O |
Nor let a mortal wretch presume | M |
To invocate so dire a doom | M |
What tho' the EAGLE sits forlorn | P |
And swoln and sad awaits the morn | P |
When he may wave his golden wing | Q |
From Night's detested gloom to spring | Q |
And with the Sun's advancement fly | R |
In full meridian blaze to die | R |
Yet shall the chirping FINCH decay | S |
Upon the hedgerow's wither'd spray | S |
Ere the first beam of light is found | T |
And drop unnotic'd to the ground | T |
So I alas shall never see | L |
The dawn of hope awake for me | L |
Still as I turn new storms appear | U |
And darker lours this mental sphere | U |
Ah who shall one short comfort give | V |
Or teach my struggling thought to live | W |
- | |
What hand my bleeding bosom bind | X |
What MOSELEY medicate my mind | X |
What Star disperse the thick'ning shade | Y |
That bids my restless Being fade | Y |
Yet I have seen the Lord of Day | S |
Dart from his car the burning ray | S |
And rush a hero to the fight | G |
Across the pendant plains of light | G |
I've seen the bashful Moon aspire | Z |
To bind her brow with mimic fire | A2 |
And o'er the calm translucent air | B2 |
Diffusive shake her silver hair | B2 |
I've paus'd enraptur'd at the tone | C2 |
That from the Evening Copse is thrown | C2 |
By the wild Poet of the glade | Y |
Who rests his wing beneath the shade | Y |
And I have prov'd th' unequal bliss | D2 |
That burns upon the crimson kiss | D2 |
When true adoring souls unite | G |
To perish in the proud delight | G |
These now are lost to me I stand | E2 |
Alone in ev'ry peopled land | E2 |
No pleasure now my cold heart cheers | F2 |
The future points a vale of tears | G2 |
Love rends my name from his bright page | O |
And yields it to approaching age | O |
Then lead me LAURA to the bow'r | H2 |
Where sadly droops each with'ring flow'r | H2 |
Where pois'nous shrubs disease exhale | I2 |
And fev'rish vapours load the gale | I2 |
There sink me to the sordid grief | J2 |
That meanly supplicates relief | J2 |
- | |
There tell me I am most despis'd | K2 |
E'en by thyself whom most I priz'd | K2 |
So shall I gladly welcome fate | L2 |
And perish in thy perfect hate | L2 |
So shall I better bear th' eternal pain | J |
Never to see thy Form or hear thy Voice again | M2 |
