-
YE silent haunts ye dark embow'ring shadesD
Lone shaggy wilds and melancholy gladesD
Ye mountains black'ning o'er the thorny valeE
Ye lucid lakes that trembling meet the galeE
Ye gloomy avenues of dire despairF
Dear last asylums of long cherish'd careF
Eternal solitudes where LOVE retiresG
To bathe his wounds and quench his fatal firesH
Where frantic lost forlorn and sad I goI
A wand'ring pilgrim in a maze of woeI
Oh to your deepest caverns let me flyJ
Breathe a fond pray'r and 'MIDST YOUR HORRORS DIEJ
-
Ye sparry grots ye once ador'd retreatsK
Ye tinkling rills ye consecrated seatsK
Whose velvet sod embroider'd o'er with flow'rsK
On the charm'd sense celestial odour poursK
Ye roseate banks o'erhung with waving treesK
That moan responsive to the murm'ring breezeK
How cold how desolate your shade appearsK
A path of mis'ry thro' a vale of tearsK
Now pale Despair hangs brooding o'er your bow'rsK
Absorbs your sweets and withers all your flow'rsK
Strips the thick foliage from your verdant shadesK
And spreads eternal darkness o'er your gladesK
No more for ME your sunny banks shall pourL
In purple tides ripe Autumn's luscious storeL
No more for ME your lust'rous tints shall glowI
Your forests wave your silv'ry channels flowI
Yet 'midst your heav'n my wounded breast shall craveM
One narrow cell my SOLACE and my GRAVEM
-
Subdu'd o'erwhelm'd a with'ring shade I strayN
Shrink from myself and shudder at the dayN
No more fond HOPE sustains my sick'ning soulO
Resistless passion spurns her meek controulO
Corroding anguish o'er each prospect low'rsK
Bends my weak frame my lusty youth devoursK
Clings to my breast where ev'ry fibre bleedsK
And on its vital throne insatiate feedsK
Where shall I fly what path untrod exploreL
Where love can wound and memory live no moreL
Where LAURA shall I turn what balsam findP
To soothe the throbbings of my fev'rish mindP
What blest relief can life's dull round impartQ
What rapture vivify the hopeless heartQ
What pitying star its beamy stream dispenseK
To light my soul and cheer my vagrant senseK
To gild the gloom of desolating woesK
And lead my wand'ring footsteps to reposeK
-
When wild with passion madd'ning with remorseK
From AVIGNON'S lov'd walls I bent my courseK
While roll'd in crimson clouds the orb of dayN
O'er seas of ether shed his parting rayN
As to his western goal he journey'd forthR
Leaving pale twilight weeping o'er the earthS
Oft did I pause oft turn my longing eyesK
To the tall spire that pierc'd the evening skiesK
All was serene save when the curfew's soundT
Struck on my pensive heart with knell profoundT
While Fancy bade my frantic mind exploreL
Those scenes of holy joy I taste no moreL
Unsullied altars consecrated shrinesK
Where curling incense round each taper twinesK
Where thro' long aisles seraphic P ANS ringU
And meek ey'd virgins choral anthems singU
Where like a being of celestial mouldV
My LAURA'S beauteous form I dar'd beholdV
While at the shrine her orisons she pour'dW
Pure as the spirit of the saint ador'dW
Oft as the cross her snowy fingers press'dX
Her auburn tresses veil'd her spotless breastX
A shade transparent deck'd her brow divineY
And bade her eyes with temper'd lustre shineY
As low she bow'd before the throne of GraceK
A cherub's softness harmoniz'd her faceK
A smile benign reveal'd her tranquil soulO
While from her lips devotion's fervour stoleO
Each conscious rapture to her share was giv'nY
Her form was virtue and her mind was heav'nY
-
Fix'd to the earth with trembling zeal I gaz'dZ
Each passion waken'd and each sense amaz'dZ
Involuntary sighs too soon confess'dX
The struggling tumults lab'ring in my breastX
No thought sublime on my rapt feelings hungA2
No sacred eloquence unchain'd my tongueA2
ALL ALL WAS LOVE while thro' my burning brainY
Rush'd a fierce torrent of convulsive painY
From my dim eyes celestial radiance stoleO
While howling demons grasp'd my sinking soulO
Guilt's writhing scorpions twining round my heartQ
Enflam'd each wound and heighten'd every smartQ
In vain I sought Religion's calm domainY
And at her footstool pour'd my hopeless painY
The priestess frowning on my impious pray'rB2
Check'd the bold suit and hurl'd me to despairF
-
AH LAURA canst thou seal the dread decreeC2
That tears thy PETRARCH from his GOD and THEEC2
That gives his mental hopes his fond desiresK
To conscious anguish and consuming firesK
Canst thou with unrelenting vengeance urgeD2
A trembling soul to fate's extremest vergeD2
And while subdu'd it supplicates reliefE2
Dash the doom'd suff'rer to eternal griefE2
Why soft enchantress spread the fatal snareF
That lures thy struggling victim to despairF
Why with meek smiles my wand'ring sense reclaimF2
Why feed with pitying looks my hopeless flameF2
-
Ah rather come in awful lustre drestQ
Calm my touch'd sense and lull the fiends to restQ
Teach me each rebel passion to disownY
Chill my hot pulse and freeze my heart to stoneY
With contrite sighs devotion's flame illumeF2
With holy tear drops gem this mental gloomF2
Come in transcendent VIRTUE'S sacred formF2
Stem the fierce torrent and appease the stormF2
Grasp the dire bolt suspended o'er my headQ
And o'er my quiv'ring heart strings patience shedQ
Check with thy councils ev'ry madd'ning flightQ
Direct me trembling to the paths of lightQ
Bow my parch'd dip to kiss the chast'ning rodQ
And lead me blushing to the throne of GODQ
-
Where'er I fly where'er my frenzy rovesK
To pine clad summits or low bending grovesK
Still on my shatter'd brain thy form appearsK
Steals to my heart and glistens thro' my tearsK
Thy voice I hear in ev'ry whispering galeO
Thy fragrant breath from Citron buds inhaleO
I mark the ROSE in native sweetness drestQ
I snatch the blushing emblem to my breastQ
Thy burnish'd ringlets float across my sightQ
In the last glowing stream of orient lightQ
And as the star of morn unfolds its fireG2
Stolen from the glances of its burning sireG2
Thy beaming eyes emit translucent raysK
The lust'rous heralds of thy soul's rich blazeK
A matron's purity thy smiles impartQ
And Heav'n's best splendours brighten in thy heartQ
Ah wherefore PETRARCH wherefore rashly dareF
The dang'rous magic of a form so fairF
-
Yet ere thy pow'r supreme my soul confess'dQ
Ere fainting Virtue fled my burning breastQ
While in its veins one ling'ring spark remain'dQ
One heavenly spark by trembling hope sustain'dQ
VAUCLUSE thy sylvan solitudes I choseK
To cure my passion or conceal my woesK
And oft beneath thy melancholy shadeQ
Reluctant pensive half resolv'd I stray'dQ
And trembling fault'ring frequent sighs I pour'dQ
Before the shrine of HIM but half ador'dQ
While as the sacred Virgin's form I view'dQ
A brighter IDOL every sense subdu'dQ
While holy vows were lost in warm desiresK
LOVE drop'd a tear that quench'd religion's firesK
While thro' my eyes my heart's true fervour shoneY
And my fond soul dear Saint WAS ALL THY OWNY
Now o'er some craggy peak when frowning nightQ
Grasps the last shad'wy tint of ruby lightQ
When o'er the vast expanse I seek in vainY
The tawny vineyard and the yellow plainY
Heedless I wander while the tempest fliesK
Brave the bleak winds and mock the threat'ning skiesK
Where from the wild romantic cliffs aroundQ
The headlong torrents fall with hollow soundQ
And stealing thro' the winding vale belowO
Unseen thro' mid day glooms incessant flowO
While sullen echo's a ry tongue betraysK
Where round her seat each brawling channel straysK
While the lone owl her lurid haunts amongA2
