INSATIATE TYRANT OF THE MINDA
Fantastic a ry empty thingB
Borne on Illusion's flutt'ring wingB
Fallacious as the wanton windA
Capricious Goddess Beauty's foeC
THOU who no settled home dost knowC
The busy World the sylvan PlainD
Alike confess thy potent reignD
Queen of the motley garb at thy commandE
FASHION waves her flow'ry wandF
See she kindles Fancy's flameG
Around her dome thy incense fliesH
The curling fumes ascend the skiesH
And fill the Trump of FameG
-
When Heaven's translucent rayI
Unveil'd the mighty work of GODJ
When the Promethean spark of dayI
Awoke his Image from a torpid clodI
When radiance pour'd on human sightI
And the illumin'd Soul beam'd with celestial lightI
EXULTING MAN sole Potentate belowC
First felt thy pois'nous glowC
He gaz'd upon his wond'rous frameG
The self approving conscious flameG
Thrill'd in each trembling vein with subtle artI
Then fix'd its baneful source within his godlike HeartI
-
Thy breath accurs'd brought deathless woeC
On Man's devoted raceK
Hurl'd th' aspiring FIEND to realms belowC
Who plung'd in fell disgraceK
There deep enthrall'd in adamantine spellsL
In chains of scorpions bound for ever ever dwellsL
-
In ev'ry scene of social joyM
Amidst the rude unpolish'd trainD
From the low offspring of the barren plainD
To him whose lofty bosom ownsN
Descent sublime from scepter'd thronesN
All all thy laws obeyI
-
Thy light hand plumes the warrior's browO
Trims the fierce war with tinsel showC
E'en in the tented fields thy banners flowC
To thee illustrious Chieftans bowO
'Tis thy capricious influence formsN
All that mad ambition warmsN
The laurel wreath tho' steep'd in bloodI
Plac'd by thy fickle hand appearsN
Radiant as the sunny spheresN
When Morn's proud beams roll in a golden floodI
-
AH VANITY avert thine eyeP
Check thy fell exulting joyM
With burning drops thy flush'd cheek laveQ
Nor gloat upon the carnag'd braveQ
For what can trophied wreaths supplyP
To drown the desolating cryP
That o'er th' empurpled fields afarR
Proclaims the dread destructive pow'r of WarS
-
E'en amidst the SAVAGE raceN
The untam'd INDIAN owns thy swayI
For THEE he paints his tawny faceN
And decks his shaggy hair with fragments gayI
For THEE he marks his sun burnt breastI
With beads and feathers idly drestI
His hardy limbs with gaudy tints imbru'dI
Reeking and mangled with the pointed dartI
Vainly he vaunts nor heeds the smartI
Tho' pitying NATURE weeps with tears of bloodI
-
Then turn my MUSE where milder joysN
The village hero's mind employsN
Where gentler sports delight the breastI
And soften'd Nature smiles confestI
Let me paint the rural sceneT
The white wash'd hut the velvet greenT
May's blithe morn exulting gleeU
The chaplet pendant on each treeU
The shining hat with tawdry ribbands boundI
The lofty may pole and the well swept groundI
Where valiant combats speak the thirst of FameG
And the loud shout proclaims the victor's nameG
-
O VANITY thy potent reignD
Spreads its influence o'er the plainD
For thee the blushing maids prepareV
Garlands wove with nicest careV
For thee they dress their festive bow'rsN
With waving wreaths of scented flow'rsN
Where the bold Youth that wins the prizeN
Reads his best Victory in his Sweetheart's EyesN
-
Such is thy pow'r thy mandate rulesN
Above the laws of Pedant SchoolsN
REASON in vain contends with TheeU
TRIUMPHANT DEATHLESS VANITYU
E'en now I feel thy vivid sparks infuseN
A warmth that guides my hand and bids me court the MUSEN
