Fantastic a ry empty thing | B |
Borne on Illusion's flutt'ring wing | B |
Fallacious as the wanton wind | A |
Capricious Goddess Beauty's foe | C |
THOU who no settled home dost know | C |
The busy World the sylvan Plain | D |
Alike confess thy potent reign | D |
Queen of the motley garb at thy command | E |
FASHION waves her flow'ry wand | F |
See she kindles Fancy's flame | G |
Around her dome thy incense flies | H |
The curling fumes ascend the skies | H |
And fill the Trump of Fame | G |
- | |
When Heaven's translucent ray | I |
Unveil'd the mighty work of GOD | J |
When the Promethean spark of day | I |
Awoke his Image from a torpid clod | I |
When radiance pour'd on human sight | I |
And the illumin'd Soul beam'd with celestial light | I |
EXULTING MAN sole Potentate below | C |
First felt thy pois'nous glow | C |
He gaz'd upon his wond'rous frame | G |
The self approving conscious flame | G |
Thrill'd in each trembling vein with subtle art | I |
Then fix'd its baneful source within his godlike Heart | I |
- | |
Thy breath accurs'd brought deathless woe | C |
On Man's devoted race | K |
Hurl'd th' aspiring FIEND to realms below | C |
Who plung'd in fell disgrace | K |
There deep enthrall'd in adamantine spells | L |
In chains of scorpions bound for ever ever dwells | L |
- | |
In ev'ry scene of social joy | M |
Amidst the rude unpolish'd train | D |
From the low offspring of the barren plain | D |
To him whose lofty bosom owns | N |
Descent sublime from scepter'd thrones | N |
All all thy laws obey | I |
- | |
Thy light hand plumes the warrior's brow | O |
Trims the fierce war with tinsel show | C |
E'en in the tented fields thy banners flow | C |
To thee illustrious Chieftans bow | O |
'Tis thy capricious influence forms | N |
All that mad ambition warms | N |
The laurel wreath tho' steep'd in blood | I |
Plac'd by thy fickle hand appears | N |
Radiant as the sunny spheres | N |
When Morn's proud beams roll in a golden flood | I |
- | |
AH VANITY avert thine eye | P |
Check thy fell exulting joy | M |
With burning drops thy flush'd cheek lave | Q |
Nor gloat upon the carnag'd brave | Q |
For what can trophied wreaths supply | P |
To drown the desolating cry | P |
That o'er th' empurpled fields afar | R |
Proclaims the dread destructive pow'r of War | S |
- | |
E'en amidst the SAVAGE race | N |
The untam'd INDIAN owns thy sway | I |
For THEE he paints his tawny face | N |
And decks his shaggy hair with fragments gay | I |
For THEE he marks his sun burnt breast | I |
With beads and feathers idly drest | I |
His hardy limbs with gaudy tints imbru'd | I |
Reeking and mangled with the pointed dart | I |
Vainly he vaunts nor heeds the smart | I |
Tho' pitying NATURE weeps with tears of blood | I |
- | |
Then turn my MUSE where milder joys | N |
The village hero's mind employs | N |
Where gentler sports delight the breast | I |
And soften'd Nature smiles confest | I |
Let me paint the rural scene | T |
The white wash'd hut the velvet green | T |
May's blithe morn exulting glee | U |
The chaplet pendant on each tree | U |
The shining hat with tawdry ribbands bound | I |
The lofty may pole and the well swept ground | I |
Where valiant combats speak the thirst of Fame | G |
And the loud shout proclaims the victor's name | G |
- | |
O VANITY thy potent reign | D |
Spreads its influence o'er the plain | D |
For thee the blushing maids prepare | V |
Garlands wove with nicest care | V |
For thee they dress their festive bow'rs | N |
With waving wreaths of scented flow'rs | N |
Where the bold Youth that wins the prize | N |
Reads his best Victory in his Sweetheart's Eyes | N |
- | |
Such is thy pow'r thy mandate rules | N |
Above the laws of Pedant Schools | N |
REASON in vain contends with Thee | U |
TRIUMPHANT DEATHLESS VANITY | U |
E'en now I feel thy vivid sparks infuse | N |
A warmth that guides my hand and bids me court the MUSE | N |
