-
TRANSCENDENT VALOUR godlike Pow'rB
Lord of the dauntless breast and stedfast mienC
Who rob'd in majesty sublimeD
Sat in thy eagle wafted carB
And led the hardy sons of warE
With head erect and eye sereneC
Amidst the arrowy show'rB
When unsubdued from clime to climeD
YOUNG AMMON taught exulting FameD
O'er earth's vast space to sound the glories of thy nameD
-
ILLUSTRIOUS VALOUR from whose glanceF
Each recreant passion shrinks dismay'dG
To whom benignant Heaven consign'dH
All that can elevate the mindH
'Tis THINE in radiant worth array'dG
To rear thy glitt'ring helmet highI
And with intrepid front defyI
Stern FATE's uplifted arm and desolating lanceF
When from the CHAOS of primeval NightJ
This wond'rous ORB first sprung to lightJ
And pois'd amid the sphery climeD
By strong Attraction's pow'r sublimeD
Its whirling course beganK
With sacred spells encompass'd roundL
Each element observ'd its boundL
Earth's solid base huge promontories boreE
Curb'd OCEAN roar'd clasp'd by the rocky shoreE
And midst metallic fires translucent rivers ranK
-
All nature own'd th'OMNIPOTENT's commandM
Luxuriant blessings deck'd the vast domainN
HE bade the budding branch expandM
And from the teeming ground call'd forth the cherish'd grainN
Salubrious springs from flinty caverns drewO
Enamell'd verdure o'er the landscape threwO
HE taught the scaly host to glideP
Sportive amidst the limpid tideP
HIS breath sustain'd the EAGLE's wingQ
With vocal sounds bade hills and valleys ringQ
Then with his Word supreme awoke to birthR
THE HUMAN FORM SUBLIME THE SOV'REIGN LORD OF EARTHR
-
VALOUR thy pure and sacred flameD
Diffus'd its radiance o'er his mindH
From THEE he learnt the fiery STEED to tameD
And with a flow'ry band the speckled PARD to bindH
Guarded by Heaven's eternal shieldS
He taught each living thing to yieldS
Wond'ring yet undismay'd he stoodT
To mark the SUN's fierce fires decayU
Fearless he saw the TYGER playU
While at his stedfast gaze the LION crouch'd subduedV
-
From age to age on FAME's bright rollW
Thy glorious attributes have shoneX
Thy influence soothes the soldier's painN
Whether beneath the freezing poleW
Or basking in the torrid zoneX
Upon the barren thirsty plainN
Led by thy firm and daring handM
O'er wastes of snow o'er burning sandM
INTREPID TARLETON chas'd the foeY
And smil'd in DEATH's grim face and brav'd his with'ring blowY
-
When late on CALPE's rock stern VICT'RY stoodT
Hurling swift vengeance o'er the bounding floodZ
Each winged bolt illum'd a flameD
IBERIA's vaunting sons to tameD
While o'er the dark unfathom'd deepA2
The blasts of desolation blewO
Fierce lightnings hov'ring round the frowning steepA2
'Midst the wild waves their fatal arrows threwO
Loud roar'd the cannon's voice with ceaseless ireB2
While the vast BULWARK glow'd a PYRAMID OF FIREC2
-
Then in each BRITON's gallant breastD2
Benignant VIRTUE shone confestD2
When Death spread wide his direful reignN
And shrieks of horror echoed o'er the mainN
Eager they flew their wretched foes to saveE2
From the dread precincts of a whelming graveE2
THEN VALOUR was thy proudest hourC2
THEN didst thou like a radiant GODD2
Check the keen rigours of th' avenging rodD2
And with soft MERCY's hand subdue the scourge of POW'RB
-
When fading in the grasp of DeathF2
ILLUSTRIOUS WOLFE on earth's cold bosom layU
His anxious soldiers thronging roundD2
Bath'd with their tears each gushing woundD2
As on his pallid lip the fleeting breathF2
In faint and broken accents stole awayU
Loud shouts of TRIUMPH fill'd the skiesG2
To Heaven he rais'd his gratelul eyesG2
'TIS VIC'TRY'S VOICE the Hero criedD2
I THANK THEE BOUNTEOUS HEAVEN then smiling DIEDD2
-
TARLETON thy mind above the POET's praiseH2
Asks not the labour'd task of flatt'ring laysH2
As the rare GEM with innate lustre glowsI2
As round the OAK the gadding Ivy growsI2
So shall THY WORTH in native radiance liveJ2
So shall the MUSE spontaneous incense giveK2
Th' HISTORIC page shall prove a lasting shrineL2
Where Truth and Valour shall THY laurels twineL2
Where with thy name recording FAME shall blendD2
The ZEALOUS PATRIOT and the FAITHFUL FRIENDD2
