SWEET BIRD OF SORROW why complainA
In such soft melody of SongB
That ECHO am'rous of thy StrainA
The ling'ring cadence doth prolongB
Ah tell me tell me whyC
Thy dulcet Notes ascend the skyC
Or on the filmy vapours glideD
Along the misty moutain's sideD
And wherefore dost Thou love to dwellE
In the dark wood and moss grown cellE
Beside the willow margin'd streamF
Why dost Thou court wan Cynthia's beamF
Sweet Songstress if thy wayward fateG
Hath robb'd Thee of thy bosom's mateG
Oh think not thy heart piercing moanH
Evap'rates on the breezy airI
Or that the plaintive Song of CareI
Steals from THY Widow'd Breast aloneH
Oft have I heard thy mournful TaleJ
On the high Cliff that o'er the ValeJ
Hangs its dark brow whose awful shadeK
Spreads a deep gloom along the gladeK
Led by its sound I've wander'd farL
Till crimson evening's flaming StarL
On Heav'n's vast dome refulgent hungM
And round ethereal vapours flungM
And oft I've sought th'HYGEIAN MAIDK
In rosy dimply smiles array'dK
Till forc'd with every HOPE to partN
Resistless Pain subdued my HeartN
-
Oh then far o'er the restless deepO
Forlorn my poignant pangs I boreP
Alone in foreign realms to weepO
Where ENVY's voice could taunt no moreP
I hop'd by mingling with the gayQ
To snatch the veil of Grief awayQ
To break Affliction's pond'rous chainA
VAIN was the Hope in vain I soughtR
The placid hour of careless thoughtR
Where Fashion wing'd her light careerS
And sportive Pleasure danc'd alongB
Oft have I shunn'd the blithsome throngB
To hide th'involuntary tearI
For e'en where rapt'rous transports glowT
From the full Heart the conscious tear will flowT
When to my downy couch remov'dU
FANCY recall'd my wearied mindV
To scenes of FRIENDSHIP left behindV
Scenes still regretted still belov'dW
Ah then I felt the pangs of GriefX
Grasp my warm Heart and mock reliefX
My burning lids Sleep's balm defiedD
And on my fev'rish lip imperfect murmurs diedD
-
Restless and sad I sought once moreP
A calm retreat on BRITAIN's shoreP
Deceitful HOPE e'en there I foundY
That soothing FRIENDSHIP's specious nameZ
Was but a short liv'd empty soundY
And LOVE a false delusive flameZ
-
Then come Sweet BIRD and with thy strainA
Steal from my breast the thorn of painA
Blest solace of my lonely hoursA2
In craggy caves and silent bow'rsA2
When HAPPY Mortals seek reposeA2
By Night's pale lamp we'll chaunt our woesA2
And as her chilling tears diffuseA2
O'er the white thorn their silv'ry dewsA2
I'll with the lucid boughts entwineB2
A weeping Wreath which round my HeadC2
Shall by the waning Cresent shineB2
And light us to our leafy bedC2
But ah nor leafy beds nor bow'rsA2
Fring'd with soft MAY's enamell'd flow'rsA2
Nor pearly leaves nor Cynthia's beamsA2
Nor smiling Pleasure's shad'wy dreamsA2
Sweet BIRD not e'en THY melting StrainsA2
Can calm the Heart where TYRANT SORROW REIGNSA2
