That paints in melting dulcet rhyme | A |
The glowing pow'r the magic art | B |
Th' extatic raptures of the Heart | B |
Soft Beauty's timid smile serene | C |
The dimples of Love's sportive mien | C |
The sweet descriptive tale to trace | D |
To picture Nature's winning grace | D |
To steal the tear from Pity's eye | E |
To catch the sympathetic sigh | E |
O teach me with swift light'nings force | F |
To watch wild passion's varying course | F |
To mark th' enthusiast's vivid fire | G |
Or calmly touch thy golden lyre | H |
While gentle Reason mildly sings | I |
Responsive to the trembling strings | I |
- | |
SWEET Nymph enchanting Poetry | J |
I dedicate my mind to Thee | J |
Oh from thy bright Parnassian bow'rs | I |
Descend to bless my sombre hours | I |
Bend to the earth thy eagle wing | K |
And on its glowing plumage bring | K |
Blithe FANCY from whose burning eye | E |
The young ideas sparkling fly | E |
O come and let us fondly stray | L |
Where rosy Health shall lead the way | L |
And soft FAVONIUS lightly spread | M |
A perfum'd carpet as we tread | M |
Ah let us from the world remove | N |
The calm forgetfulness to prove | N |
Which at the still of evening's close | I |
Lulls the tir'd peasant to repose | I |
Repose whose balmy joys o'er pay | L |
The sultry labours of the day | L |
- | |
And when the blue ey'd dawn appears | I |
Just peeping thro' her veil of tears | I |
Or blushing opes her silver gate | O |
And on its threshold stands elate | O |
And flings her rosy mantle far | P |
O'er every loit'ring dewy star | P |
And calls the wanton breezes forth | Q |
And sprinkles diamonds o'er the earth | R |
While in the green wood's shade profound | S |
The insect race with buzzing sound | S |
Flit o'er the rill a glitt'ring train | T |
Or swarm along the sultry plain | T |
Then in sweet converse let us rove | U |
Where in the thyme embroider'd grove | U |
The musky air its fragrance pours | I |
Upon the silv'ry scatter'd show'rs | I |
To hail soft Zephyr as she goes | I |
To fan the dew drop from the rose | I |
To shelter from the scorching beam | V |
And muse beside the rippling stream | V |
- | |
Or when at twilight's placid hour | G |
We stroll to some sequester'd bow'r | P |
And watch the haughty Sun retire | H |
Beneath his canopy of fire | G |
While slow the dusky clouds enfold | W |
Day's crimson curtains fring'd with gold | W |
And o'er the meadows faintly fly | E |
Pale shadows of the purpling sky | E |
While softly o'er the pearl deck'd plain | T |
Cold Dian leads the sylvan train | T |
In mazy dance and sportive glee | J |
SWEET MUSE I'll fondly turn to thee | J |
And thou shalt deck my couch with flow'rs | I |
And wing with joy my silent hours | I |
- | |
When Sleep with downy hand shall spread | M |
A wreath of poppies round my head | M |
Then FANCY on her wing sublime | A |
Shall waft me to the sacred clime | A |
Where my enlighten'd sense shall view | X |
Thro' ether realms of azure hue | X |
That flame where SHAKESPEARE us'd to fill | Y |
With matchless fire his golden quill | Y |
While from its point bright Genius caught | Z |
The wit supreme the glowing thought | A2 |
The magic tone that sweetly hung | B2 |
About the music of his tongue | B2 |
Then will I skim the floating air | C2 |
On a light couch of gossamer | G |
While with my wonder aching eye | E |
I contemplate the spangled sky | E |
And hear the vaulted roof repeat | D2 |
The song of Inspiration sweet | D2 |
While round the winged cherub train | T |
Shall iterate the a ry strain | T |
Swift thro' my quiv'ring nerves shall float | E2 |
The tremours of each thrilling note | E2 |
And every eager sense confess | I |
Extatic transport's wild excess | I |
'Till waking from the glorious dream | A |
I hail the morn's refulgent beam | A |
- | |
DEAR Maid of ever varying mien | C |
Exulting pensive gay serene | C |
Now in transcendent pathos drest | E2 |
Now gentle as the turtle's breast | E2 |
Where'er thy feath'ry steps shall lead | E2 |
To side long hill or flow'ry mead | E2 |
To sorrow's coldest darkest cell | F2 |
Or where by Cynthia's glimm'ring ray | L |
The dapper fairies frisk and play | L |
About some cowslip's golden bell | F2 |
And in their wanton frolic mirth | R |
Pluck the young daisies from the earth | R |
To canopy their tiny heads | I |
And decorate their verdant beds | I |
While to the grass hopper's shrill tune | G2 |
They quaff libations to the moon | G2 |
From acorn goblets amply fill'd | E2 |
With dew from op'ning flow'rs distill'd | E2 |
Or when the lurid tempest pours | I |
From its dark urn impetuous show'rs | I |
Or from its brow's terrific frown | H2 |
Hurls the pale murd'rous lightnings down | H2 |
To thy enchanting breast I'll spring | K |
And shield me with thy golden wing | K |
- | |
Or when amidst ethereal fire | G |
Thou strik'st thy DELLA CRUSCAN lyre | H |
While round to catch the heavenly song | I2 |
Myriads of wond'ring seraphs throng | I2 |
Whether thy harp's empassioned strain | T |
Pours forth an OVID's tender pain | T |
Or in PINDARIC flights sublime | A |
Re echoes thro' the starry clime | A |
Thee I'll adore transcendent guest | E2 |
And woe thee to my burning breast | E2 |
- | |
But if thy magic pow'rs impart | E2 |
One soft sensation to the heart | E2 |
If thy warm precepts can dispense | I |
One thrilling transport o'er my sense | I |
Oh keep thy gifts and let me fly | E |
In APATHY's cold arms to die | E |
