O let me seize thy pen sublimeA
That paints in melting dulcet rhymeA
The glowing pow'r the magic artB
Th' extatic raptures of the HeartB
Soft Beauty's timid smile sereneC
The dimples of Love's sportive mienC
The sweet descriptive tale to traceD
To picture Nature's winning graceD
To steal the tear from Pity's eyeE
To catch the sympathetic sighE
O teach me with swift light'nings forceF
To watch wild passion's varying courseF
To mark th' enthusiast's vivid fireG
Or calmly touch thy golden lyreH
While gentle Reason mildly singsI
Responsive to the trembling stringsI
-
SWEET Nymph enchanting PoetryJ
I dedicate my mind to TheeJ
Oh from thy bright Parnassian bow'rsI
Descend to bless my sombre hoursI
Bend to the earth thy eagle wingK
And on its glowing plumage bringK
Blithe FANCY from whose burning eyeE
The young ideas sparkling flyE
O come and let us fondly strayL
Where rosy Health shall lead the wayL
And soft FAVONIUS lightly spreadM
A perfum'd carpet as we treadM
Ah let us from the world removeN
The calm forgetfulness to proveN
Which at the still of evening's closeI
Lulls the tir'd peasant to reposeI
Repose whose balmy joys o'er payL
The sultry labours of the dayL
-
And when the blue ey'd dawn appearsI
Just peeping thro' her veil of tearsI
Or blushing opes her silver gateO
And on its threshold stands elateO
And flings her rosy mantle farP
O'er every loit'ring dewy starP
And calls the wanton breezes forthQ
And sprinkles diamonds o'er the earthR
While in the green wood's shade profoundS
The insect race with buzzing soundS
Flit o'er the rill a glitt'ring trainT
Or swarm along the sultry plainT
Then in sweet converse let us roveU
Where in the thyme embroider'd groveU
The musky air its fragrance poursI
Upon the silv'ry scatter'd show'rsI
To hail soft Zephyr as she goesI
To fan the dew drop from the roseI
To shelter from the scorching beamV
And muse beside the rippling streamV
-
Or when at twilight's placid hourG
We stroll to some sequester'd bow'rP
And watch the haughty Sun retireH
Beneath his canopy of fireG
While slow the dusky clouds enfoldW
Day's crimson curtains fring'd with goldW
And o'er the meadows faintly flyE
Pale shadows of the purpling skyE
While softly o'er the pearl deck'd plainT
Cold Dian leads the sylvan trainT
In mazy dance and sportive gleeJ
SWEET MUSE I'll fondly turn to theeJ
And thou shalt deck my couch with flow'rsI
And wing with joy my silent hoursI
-
When Sleep with downy hand shall spreadM
A wreath of poppies round my headM
Then FANCY on her wing sublimeA
Shall waft me to the sacred climeA
Where my enlighten'd sense shall viewX
Thro' ether realms of azure hueX
That flame where SHAKESPEARE us'd to fillY
With matchless fire his golden quillY
While from its point bright Genius caughtZ
The wit supreme the glowing thoughtA2
The magic tone that sweetly hungB2
About the music of his tongueB2
Then will I skim the floating airC2
On a light couch of gossamerG
While with my wonder aching eyeE
I contemplate the spangled skyE
And hear the vaulted roof repeatD2
The song of Inspiration sweetD2
While round the winged cherub trainT
Shall iterate the a ry strainT
Swift thro' my quiv'ring nerves shall floatE2
The tremours of each thrilling noteE2
And every eager sense confessI
Extatic transport's wild excessI
'Till waking from the glorious dreamA
I hail the morn's refulgent beamA
-
DEAR Maid of ever varying mienC
Exulting pensive gay sereneC
Now in transcendent pathos drestE2
Now gentle as the turtle's breastE2
Where'er thy feath'ry steps shall leadE2
To side long hill or flow'ry meadE2
To sorrow's coldest darkest cellF2
Or where by Cynthia's glimm'ring rayL
The dapper fairies frisk and playL
About some cowslip's golden bellF2
And in their wanton frolic mirthR
Pluck the young daisies from the earthR
To canopy their tiny headsI
And decorate their verdant bedsI
While to the grass hopper's shrill tuneG2
They quaff libations to the moonG2
From acorn goblets amply fill'dE2
With dew from op'ning flow'rs distill'dE2
Or when the lurid tempest poursI
From its dark urn impetuous show'rsI
Or from its brow's terrific frownH2
Hurls the pale murd'rous lightnings downH2
To thy enchanting breast I'll springK
And shield me with thy golden wingK
-
Or when amidst ethereal fireG
Thou strik'st thy DELLA CRUSCAN lyreH
While round to catch the heavenly songI2
Myriads of wond'ring seraphs throngI2
Whether thy harp's empassioned strainT
Pours forth an OVID's tender painT
Or in PINDARIC flights sublimeA
Re echoes thro' the starry climeA
Thee I'll adore transcendent guestE2
And woe thee to my burning breastE2
-
But if thy magic pow'rs impartE2
One soft sensation to the heartE2
If thy warm precepts can dispenseI
One thrilling transport o'er my senseI
Oh keep thy gifts and let me flyE
In APATHY's cold arms to dieE
