PALE GODDESS of the witching hourA
Blest Contemplation's placid friendB
Oft in my solitary bow'rC
I mark thy lucid beamD
From thy crystal car descendB
Whitening the spangled heath and limpid sapphire streamD
-
And oft amidst the shades of nightE
I court thy undulating lightE
When Fairies dance around the verdant ringF
Or frisk beside the bubbling springF
When the thoughtless SHEPHERD'S songG
Echoes thro' the silent airH
As he pens his fleecy careH
Or plods with saunt'ring gait the dewy meads alongG
-
CHASTE ORB as thro' the vaulted skyI
Feath'ry clouds transparent sailJ
When thy languid weeping eyeI
Sheds its soft tears upon the painted valeJ
As I ponder o'er the floodsK
Or tread with listless step th'embow'ring woodsL
O let thy transitory beamD
Soothe my sad mind with FANCY'S a ry dreamD
-
Wrapt in REFLECTION let me traceM
O'er the vast ethereal spaceM
Stars whose twinkling fires illumeD
Dark brow'd NIGHT'S obtrusive gloomD
Where across the concave wideN
Flaming METEORS swiftly glideN
Or along the milky wayO
Vapours shoot a silvery rayO
And as I mark thy faint reclining headP
Sinking on Ocean's pearly bedP
Let REASON tell my soul thus all things fadeQ
-
The Seasons change the garish SUNR
When Day's burning car hath runR
Its fiery course no more we viewS
While o'er the mountain's golden headP
Streak'd with tints of crimson hueS
Twilight's filmy curtains spreadP
Stealing o'er Nature's face a desolating shadeQ
-
Yon musky FLOW'R that scents the earthT
The SOD that gave its odours birthT
The ROCK that breaks the torrent's forceU
The VALE that owns its wand'ring courseU
The woodlands where the vocal throngG
Trill the wild melodious songG
Thirsty desarts sands that glowV
Mountains cap'd with flaky snowV
Luxuriant groves enamell'd fieldsW
All all prolific Nature yieldsW
Alike shall end the sensate HEARTX
With all its passions all its fireA
Touch'd by FATE'S unerring dartX
Shall feel its vital strength expireY
Those eyes that beam with FRIENDSHIP'S rayO
And glance ineffable delightE
Shall shrink from LIFE'S translucid dayO
And close their fainting orbs in DEATH'S impervious nightE
-
Then what remains for mortal pow'rC
But TIME'S dull journey to beguileZ
To deck with joy the winged hourA
To meet its sorrows with a patient smileZ
And when the toilsome pilgrimage shall endB
To greet the tyrant as a welcome friendB
