SORC'RESS of the Cave profoundA
Hence with thy pale and meagre trainB
Nor dare my roseate bow'r profaneB
Where light heel'd mirth despotic reignsC
Slightly bound in feath'ry chainsC
And scatt'ring blisses roundA
-
Hence to thy native Chaos whereD
Nurs'd by thy haggard Dam DESPAIRD
Shackled by thy numbing spellE
Mis'ry's pallid children dwellE
Where brooding o'er thy fatal charmsF
FRENZY rolls the vacant eyeG
Where hopeless LOVE with folded armsF
Drops the tear and heaves the sighG
Till cherish'd Passion's tyrant swayH
Chills the warm pulse of Youth with premature decayH
-
O fly Thee to some Church yard's gloomI
Where beside the mould'ring tombI
Restless Spectres glide awayH
Fading in the glimpse of DayH
Or where the Virgin ORB of NightJ
Silvers o'er the Forest wideK
Or across the silent tideK
Flings her soft and quiv'ring lightJ
Where beneath some aged TreeL
Sounds of mournful MelodyL
Caught from the NIGHTINGALE's enamour'd TaleM
Steal on faint Echo's ear and float upon the galeM
-
DREAD POW'R whose touch magnetic leadsN
O'er enchanted spangled meadsN
Where by the glow worm's twinkling rayH
A ry Spirits lightly playH
Where around some Haunted Tow'rO
Boding Ravens wing their flightJ
Viewless in the gloom of NightJ
Warning oft the luckless hourP
Or beside the Murd'rer's bedQ
From thy dark and morbid wingR
O'er his fev'rish burning headQ
Drops of conscious auguish flingR
While freezing HORROR's direful screamS
Rouses his guilty soul from kind oblivion's dreamS
-
Oft beneath the witching YewT
The trembling MAID steals forth unseenU
With true love wreaths of deathless greenU
Her Lover's grave to strewT
Her downcast Eye no joy illumesN
Nor on her Cheek the soft Rose bloomsN
Her mourning Heart the victim of thy pow'rO
Shrinks from the glare of Mirth and hails the MURKY HOURP
-
O say what FIEND first gave thee birthV
In what fell Desart wert thou bornW
Why does thy hollow voice forlornW
So fascinate the Sons of EarthV
That once encircled in thy icy armsN
They court thy torpid touch and doat upon thy CharmsN
-
HATED IMP I brave thy SpellE
REASON shuns thy barb'rous swayH
Life with mirth should glide awayH
Despondency with guilt should dwellE
For conscious TRUTH's unruffled mienU
Displays the dauntless Eye and patient smile sereneU
