With folded arms and pensive mien | A |
Who wand'ring near yon thorny wild | B |
So oft my length'ning hours beguil'd | B |
Thou who within thy peaceful call | C |
Canst laugh at LIFE'S tumultuous care | D |
While calm repose delights to dwell | E |
On beds of fragrant roses there | D |
Where meek ey'd PATIENCE waits to greet | F |
The woe worn Trav'ller's weary feet | F |
'Till by her blest and cheering ray | G |
The clouds of sorrow fade away | G |
Where conscious RECTITUDE retires | H |
Instructive WISDOM calm DESIRES | I |
Prolific SCIENCE lab'ring ART | J |
And GENIUS with expanded heart | J |
- | |
Far from thy lone and pure domain | K |
Steals pallid GUILT whose scowling eye | L |
Marks the rack'd soul's convulsive pain | K |
Tho' hid beneath the mask of joy | M |
Madd'ning AMBITION'S dauntless band | N |
Lean AVARICE with iron hand | N |
HYPOCRISY with fawning tongue | O |
Soft FLATT'RY with persuasive song | P |
Appall'd in gloomy shadows fly | L |
From MEDITATION'S piercing eye | L |
- | |
How oft with thee I've stroll'd unseen | A |
O'er the lone valley's velvet green | A |
And brush'd away the twilight dew | Q |
That stain'd the cowslip's golden hue | Q |
Oft as I ponder'd o'er the scene | A |
Would mem'ry picture to my heart | J |
How full of grief my days have been | R |
How swiftly rapt'rous hours depart | J |
Then would'st thou sweetly reas'ning say | G |
TIME journeys thro' the roughest day | G |
- | |
THE HERMIT from the world retir'd | S |
By calm Religion's voice inspir'd | T |
Tells how serenely time glides on | U |
From crimson morn 'till setting sun | V |
How guiltless pure and free from strife | W |
He journeys thro' the vale of Life | W |
Within his breast nor sorrows mourn | X |
Nor cares perplex nor passions burn | Y |
No jealous fears or boundless joys | Z |
The tenor of his mind destroys | Z |
And when revolving mem'ry shows | A2 |
The thorny world's unnumber'd woes | A2 |
He blesses HEAV'N's benign decree | B2 |
That gave his days to PEACE and THEE | B2 |
- | |
The gentle MAID whose roseate bloom | C2 |
Fades fast within a cloyster's gloom | C2 |
Far by relentless FATE remov'd | D2 |
From all her youthful fancy lov'd | E2 |
When her warm heart no longer bleeds | F2 |
And cool Reflection's hour succeeds | F2 |
Led by THY downy hand she strays | G2 |
Along the green dell's tangled maze | G2 |
Where thro' dank leaves the whisp'ring show'rs | G2 |
Awake to life the fainting flow'rs | G2 |
Absorb'd by THEE she hears no more | H2 |
The distant torrent's fearful roar | H2 |
The well known VESPER's silver tone | I2 |
The bleak wind's desolating moan | I2 |
No more she sees the nodding spires | G2 |
Where the dark bird of night retires | G2 |
While Echo chaunts her boding song | P |
The cloyster's mould'ring walls among | O |
No more she weeps at Fate's decree | B2 |
But yields her pensive soul to THEE | B2 |
- | |
THE SAGE whose palsy'd head bends low | J2 |
'Midst scatter'd locks of silv'ry snow | J2 |
Still by his MIND's clear lustre tells | G2 |
What warmth within his bosom dwells | G2 |
How glows his heart with treasur'd lore | H2 |
How rich in Wisdom's boundless store | H2 |
In fading Life's protracted hour | K2 |
He smiles at Death's terrific pow'r | L2 |
He lifts his radiant eyes which gleam | M2 |
With Resignation's sainted beam | M2 |
And as the weeping star of morn | X |
Sheds lustre on the wither'd thorn | X |
His tear benign calm comfort throws | G2 |
O'er rugged Life's corroding woes | G2 |
His pious soul's enlighten'd rays | G2 |
Dart forth to gild his wint'ry days | G2 |
He smiles serene at Heav'n's decree | B2 |
And his last hour resigns to THEE | B2 |
- | |
When Learning with Promethean art | J |
Unveils to light the youthful heart | J |
When on the richly budding spray | G |
The glorious beams of Genius play | G |
When the expanded leaves proclaim | N2 |
The promis'd fruits of rip'ning Fame | N2 |
O MEDITATION maid divine | O2 |
Proud REASON owns the work is THINE | O2 |
- | |
Oft have I known thy magic pow'r | L2 |
Irradiate sorrow's wint'ry hour | K2 |
Oft my full heart to THEE hath flown | I2 |
And wept for mis'ries not its own | I2 |
When pinch'd with agonizing PAIN | K |
My restless bosom dar'd complain | K |
Oft have I sunk upon THY breast | P2 |
And lull'd my weary mind to rest | P2 |
'Till I have own'd the blest decree | B2 |
That gave my soul to PEACE and THEE | B2 |
