SWEET CHILD OF REASON maid sereneA
With folded arms and pensive mienA
Who wand'ring near yon thorny wildB
So oft my length'ning hours beguil'dB
Thou who within thy peaceful callC
Canst laugh at LIFE'S tumultuous careD
While calm repose delights to dwellE
On beds of fragrant roses thereD
Where meek ey'd PATIENCE waits to greetF
The woe worn Trav'ller's weary feetF
'Till by her blest and cheering rayG
The clouds of sorrow fade awayG
Where conscious RECTITUDE retiresH
Instructive WISDOM calm DESIRESI
Prolific SCIENCE lab'ring ARTJ
And GENIUS with expanded heartJ
-
Far from thy lone and pure domainK
Steals pallid GUILT whose scowling eyeL
Marks the rack'd soul's convulsive painK
Tho' hid beneath the mask of joyM
Madd'ning AMBITION'S dauntless bandN
Lean AVARICE with iron handN
HYPOCRISY with fawning tongueO
Soft FLATT'RY with persuasive songP
Appall'd in gloomy shadows flyL
From MEDITATION'S piercing eyeL
-
How oft with thee I've stroll'd unseenA
O'er the lone valley's velvet greenA
And brush'd away the twilight dewQ
That stain'd the cowslip's golden hueQ
Oft as I ponder'd o'er the sceneA
Would mem'ry picture to my heartJ
How full of grief my days have beenR
How swiftly rapt'rous hours departJ
Then would'st thou sweetly reas'ning sayG
TIME journeys thro' the roughest dayG
-
THE HERMIT from the world retir'dS
By calm Religion's voice inspir'dT
Tells how serenely time glides onU
From crimson morn 'till setting sunV
How guiltless pure and free from strifeW
He journeys thro' the vale of LifeW
Within his breast nor sorrows mournX
Nor cares perplex nor passions burnY
No jealous fears or boundless joysZ
The tenor of his mind destroysZ
And when revolving mem'ry showsA2
The thorny world's unnumber'd woesA2
He blesses HEAV'N's benign decreeB2
That gave his days to PEACE and THEEB2
-
The gentle MAID whose roseate bloomC2
Fades fast within a cloyster's gloomC2
Far by relentless FATE remov'dD2
From all her youthful fancy lov'dE2
When her warm heart no longer bleedsF2
And cool Reflection's hour succeedsF2
Led by THY downy hand she straysG2
Along the green dell's tangled mazeG2
Where thro' dank leaves the whisp'ring show'rsG2
Awake to life the fainting flow'rsG2
Absorb'd by THEE she hears no moreH2
The distant torrent's fearful roarH2
The well known VESPER's silver toneI2
The bleak wind's desolating moanI2
No more she sees the nodding spiresG2
Where the dark bird of night retiresG2
While Echo chaunts her boding songP
The cloyster's mould'ring walls amongO
No more she weeps at Fate's decreeB2
But yields her pensive soul to THEEB2
-
THE SAGE whose palsy'd head bends lowJ2
'Midst scatter'd locks of silv'ry snowJ2
Still by his MIND's clear lustre tellsG2
What warmth within his bosom dwellsG2
How glows his heart with treasur'd loreH2
How rich in Wisdom's boundless storeH2
In fading Life's protracted hourK2
He smiles at Death's terrific pow'rL2
He lifts his radiant eyes which gleamM2
With Resignation's sainted beamM2
And as the weeping star of mornX
Sheds lustre on the wither'd thornX
His tear benign calm comfort throwsG2
O'er rugged Life's corroding woesG2
His pious soul's enlighten'd raysG2
Dart forth to gild his wint'ry daysG2
He smiles serene at Heav'n's decreeB2
And his last hour resigns to THEEB2
-
When Learning with Promethean artJ
Unveils to light the youthful heartJ
When on the richly budding sprayG
The glorious beams of Genius playG
When the expanded leaves proclaimN2
The promis'd fruits of rip'ning FameN2
O MEDITATION maid divineO2
Proud REASON owns the work is THINEO2
-
Oft have I known thy magic pow'rL2
Irradiate sorrow's wint'ry hourK2
Oft my full heart to THEE hath flownI2
And wept for mis'ries not its ownI2
When pinch'd with agonizing PAINK
My restless bosom dar'd complainK
Oft have I sunk upon THY breastP2
And lull'd my weary mind to restP2
'Till I have own'd the blest decreeB2
That gave my soul to PEACE and THEEB2
