Rhyme Scheme: ABBCCADD DDEEFFGGHHII DDJKKJLLBB MMFNNL OOPPGQGQCCDIIRSSRD TUDDHNHN VVQQKWXOOW AANNMM AAPPQQYYUUDD AAQQAACome bright eyed maid | A |
Pure offspring of the tranquil mind | B |
Haste my fev'rish temples bind | B |
With olive wreaths of em'rald hue | C |
Steep'd in morn's ethereal dew | C |
Where in mild HELVETIA's shade | A |
Blushing summer round her flings | D |
Warm gales and sunny show'rs that hang upon her wings | D |
- | |
I'll seek thee in ITALIA's bow'rs | D |
Where supine on beds of flow'rs | D |
Melody's soul touching throng | E |
Strike the soft lute or trill the melting song | E |
Where blithe FANCY queen of pleasure | F |
Pours each rich luxuriant treasure | F |
For thee I'll climb the breezy hill | G |
While the balmy dews distill | G |
Odours from the budding thorn | H |
Drop'd from the lust'rous lids of morn | H |
Who starting from her shad'wy bed | I |
Binds her gold fillet round the mountain's head | I |
- | |
There I'll press from herbs and flow'rs | D |
Juices bless'd with opiate pow'rs | D |
Whose magic potency can heal | J |
The throb of agonizing pain | K |
And thro' the purple swelling vein | K |
With subtle influence steal | J |
Heav'n opes for thee its aromatic store | L |
To bathe each languid gasping pore | L |
But where O where shall cherish'd sorrow find | B |
The lenient balm to soothe the feeling mind | B |
- | |
O mem'ry busy barb'rous foe | M |
At thy fell touch I wake to woe | M |
Alas the flatt'ring dream is o'er | F |
From thee the bright illusions fly | N |
Thou bidst the glitt'ring phantoms die | N |
And hope and youth and fancy charm no more | L |
- | |
No more for me the tip toe SPRING | O |
Drops flowrets from her infant wing | O |
For me in vain the wild thymes bloom | P |
Thro' the forest flings perfume | P |
In vain I climb th'embroider'd hill | G |
To breathe the clear autumnal air | Q |
In vain I quaff the lucid rill | G |
Since jocund HEALTH delights not there | Q |
To greet my heart no more I view | C |
With sparkling eye the silv'ry dew | C |
Sprinkling May's tears upon the folded rose | D |
As low it droops its young and blushing head | I |
Press'd by grey twilight to its mossy bed | I |
No more I lave amidst the tide | R |
Or bound along the tufted grove | S |
Or o'er enamel'd meadows rove | S |
Where on Zephyr's pinions glide | R |
Salubrious airs that waft the nymph repose | D |
- | |
Lightly o'er the yellow heath | T |
Steals thy soft and fragrant breath | U |
Breath inhal'd from musky flow'rs | D |
Newly bath'd in perfum'd show'rs | D |
See the rosy finger'd morn | H |
Opes her bright refulgent eye | N |
Hills and valleys to adorn | H |
While from her burning glance the scatter'd vapours fly | N |
- | |
Soon ah soon the painted scene | V |
The hill's blue top the valley's green | V |
Midst clouds of snow and whirlwinds drear | Q |
Shall cold and comfortless appear | Q |
The howling blast shall strip the plain | K |
And bid my pensive bosom learn | W |
Tho' NATURE's face shall smile again | X |
And on the glowing breast of Spring | O |
Creation all her gems shall fling | O |
YOUTH's April morn shall ne'er return | W |
- | |
Then come Oh quickly come Hygeian Maid | A |
Each throbbing pulse each quiv'ring nerve pervade | A |
Flash thy bright fires across my languid eye | N |
Tint my pale visage with thy roseate die | N |
Bid my heart's current own a temp'rate glow | M |
And from its crimson source in tepid channels flow | M |
- | |
O HEALTH celestial Nymph without thy aid | A |
Creation sickens in oblivions shade | A |
Along the drear and solitary gloom | P |
We steal on thorny footsteps to the tomb | P |
Youth age wealth poverty alike agree | Q |
To live is anguish when depriv'd of Thee | Q |
To THEE indulgent Heav'n benignly gave | Y |
The touch to heal the extacy to save | Y |
The balmy incense of thy fost'ring breath | U |
Wafts the wan victim from the fangs of Death | U |
Robs the grim Tyrant of his trembling prize | D |
Cheers the faint soul and lifts it to the skies | D |
- | |
Let not the gentle rose thy bounty drest | A |
To meet the rising son with od'rous breast | A |
Which glow'd with artless tints at noon tide hour | Q |
And shed soft tears upon each drooping flower | Q |
With with'ring anguish mourn the parting Day | A |
Shrink to the Earth and sorrowing fade away | A |
