Deep in th' abyss where frantic horror bidesA
In thickest mists of vapours fellB
Where wily Serpents hissing glareC
And the dark Demon of Revenge residesA
At midnight's murky hourD
Thy origin beganE
Rapacious MALICE was thy sireD
Thy Dam the sullen witch DespairC
Thy Nurse insatiate IreF
The FATES conspir'd their ills to twineG
About thy heart's infected shrineG
They gave thee each disastrous spellB
Each desolating pow'rH
To blast the fairest hopes of manE
-
Soon as thy fatal birth was knownI
From her unhallow'd throneI
With ghastly smile pale Hecate sprungJ
Thy hideous form the Sorc'ress press'dK
With kindred fondness to her breastK
Her haggard eyeL
Short forth a ray of transient joyM
Whilst thro' th' infernal shades exulting clamours rungJ
-
Above thy fellow fiends thy tyrant handN
Grasp'd with resistless force supreme commandN
The dread terrific crowdO
Before thy iron sceptre bow'dO
Now seated in thy ebon caveP
Around thy throne relentless furies raveP
A wreath of ever wounding thornQ
Thy scowling brows encompass roundR
Thy heart by knawing Vultures tornQ
Thy meagre limbs with deathless scorpions boundR
Thy black associates torpid IGNORANCEA
And pining JEALOUSY with eye askanceA
With savage rapture execute thy willS
And strew the paths of life with every torturing illS
-
Nor can the sainted dead escape thy rageT
Thy vengeance haunts the silent graveP
Thy taunts insult the ashes of the braveP
While proud AMBITION weeps thy rancour to assuageT
The laurels round the POET's bustU
Twin'd by the liberal hand of TasteV
By thy malignant grasp defac'dV
Fade to their native dustU
Thy ever watchful eye no labour tiresA
Beneath thy venom'd touch the angel TRUTH expiresA
-
When in thy petrifying carH
Thy scaly dragons waft thy formW
Then swifter deadlier farH
Than the keen lightning's lanceA
That wings its way across the yelling stormW
Thy barbed shafts fly whizzing roundR
While every with'ring glanceA
Inflicts a cureless woundR
-
Thy giant arm with pond'rous blowX
Hurls genius from her glorious heightY
Bends the fair front of Virtue lowX
And meanly pilfers every pure delightY
Thy hollow voice the sense appallsA
Thy vigilance the mind enthrallsA
Rest hast thou none by night by dayZ
Thy jealous ardour seeks for preyZ
Nought can restrain thy swift careerA2
Thy smile derides the suff'rer's wrongsA
Thy tongue the sland'rers tale prolongsA
Thy thirst imbibes the victim's tearC
Thy breast recoils from friendship's flameB2
Sick'ning thou hear'st the trump of FameB2
Worth gives to thee the direst pangC2
The Lover's rapture wounds thy heartD2
The proudest efforts of prolific artD2
Shrink from thy poisonous fangC2
-
In vain the Sculptor's lab'ring handN
Calls fine proportion from the Parian stoneI
In vain the Minstrel's chords commandN
The soft vibrations of seraphic toneI
For swift thy violating armE2
Tears from perfection ev'ry charmE2
Nor rosy YOUTH nor BEAUTY's smilesA
Thy unrelenting rage beguilesA
Thy breath contaminates the fairest nameB2
And binds the guiltless brow with ever blist'ring shameB2
