Ode To Eloquence Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDEFGGHHF EEIIJJKLLKMMHH NNOPPO QRNSNTNNEEDDHU VWEXEXNNBYYBZZHAIL GODDESS of persuasive art | A |
The magic of whose tuneful tongue | B |
Lulls to soft harmony the wand'ring heart | A |
With fascinating song | C |
O let me hear thy heav'n taught strain | D |
As thro' my quiv'ring pulses steal | E |
The mingling throbs of joy and pain | D |
Which only sensate minds can feel | E |
Ah let me taste the bliss supreme | F |
Which thy warm touch unerring flings | G |
O'er the rapt sense's finest strings | G |
When GENIUS darting frown the sky | H |
Glances across my wond'ring eye | H |
Her animating beam | F |
- | |
SWEET ELOQUENCE thy mild controul | E |
Awakes to REASON's dawn the IDIOT soul | E |
When mists absorb the MENTAL sight | I |
'Tis thine to dart CREATIVE LIGHT | I |
'Tis thine to chase the filmy clouds away | J |
And o'er the mind's deep bloom spread a refulgent ray | J |
Nor is thy wond'rous art confin'd | K |
Within the bounds of MENTAL space | L |
For thou canst boast exterior grace | L |
Bright emblem of the fertile mind | K |
Yes I have seen thee with persuasion meek | M |
Bathe in the lucid tear on Beauty's cheek | M |
Have mark'd thee in the downcast eye | H |
When suff'ring Virtue claim'd the pitying sigh | H |
- | |
Oft by thy thrilling voice subdued | N |
The meagre fiend INGRATITUDE | N |
Her treach'rous fang conceals | O |
Pale ENVY hides her forked sting | P |
And CALUMNY beneath the wing | P |
Of dark oblivion steals | O |
- | |
Before thy pure and lambent fire | Q |
Shall frozen Apathy expire | R |
Thy influence warm and unconfin'd | N |
Shall rapt'rous transports give | S |
And in the base and torpid mind | N |
Shall bid the fine Affections live | T |
When JEALOUSY's malignant dart | N |
Strikes at the fondly throbbing heart | N |
When fancied woes on every side assail | E |
Thy honey'd accents shall prevail | E |
When burning Passion withers up the brain | D |
And the fix'd lids the glowing drops sustain | D |
Touch'd by thy voice the melting eye | H |
Shall pour the balm of yielding SYMPATHY | U |
- | |
'Tis thine with lenient Song to move | V |
The dumb despair of hopeless LOVE | W |
Or when the animated soul | E |
On Fancy's wing shall soar | X |
And scorning Reason's soft controul | E |
Untrodden paths explore | X |
'Till by distracting conflicts tost | N |
The intellectual source is lost | N |
E'en then the witching music of thy tongue | B |
Stealing thro' Mis'ry's DARKEST GLOOM | Y |
Weaves the fine threads of FANCY's loom | Y |
'Till every slacken'd nerve new strung | B |
Bids renovated NATURE shine | Z |
Amidst the fost'ring beams of ELOQUENCE DIVINE | Z |
