TERRIFIC FIEND thou Monster fellA
Condemn'd in haunts profane to dwellA
Why quit thy solitary HomeB
O'er wide Creation's paths to roamB
Pale Tyrant of the timid HeartC
Whose visionary spells can bindD
The strongest passions of the mindD
Freezing Life's current with thy baneful ArtC
-
Nature recoils when thou art nearE
For round thy form all plagues are seenF
Thine is the frantic tone the sullen mienF
The glance of petrifying fearE
The haggard Brow the low'ring EyeG
The hollow Cheek the smother'd SighG
When thy usurping fangs assailH
The sacred Bonds of Friendship failH
Meek bosom'd Pity sues in vainI
Imperious Sorrow spurns reliefJ
Feeds on the luxury of GriefJ
Drinks the hot Tear and hugs the galling ChainI
-
AH plunge no more thy ruthless dartC
In the dark centre of the guilty HeartC
The POW'R SUPREME with pitying eyeG
Looks on the erring Child of MiseryK
MERCY arrests the wing of TimeL
To expiate the wretch's crimeL
Insulted HEAV'N consign'd thy brandM
To the first Murd'rer's crimson handM
Swift o'er the earth the Monster flewN
And round th' ensanguin'd Poisons threwN
By CONSCIENCE goaded driven by FEARE
Till the meek Cherub HOPE subdued his fell careerE
-
Thy Reign is past when erst the braveO
Imbib'd contagion o'er the midnight lampP
Close pent in loathsome cells where poisons dampP
Hung round the confines of a Living GraveO
Where no glimm'ring ray illum'dM
The flinty walls where pond'rous chainsQ
Bound the wan Victim to the humid earthR
Where VALOUR GENIUS TASTE and WORTHR
In pestilential caves entomb'dM
Sought thy cold arms and smiling mock'd their painsQ
-
THERE each procrastinated hourS
The woe worn suff'rer gasping layT
While by his side in proud arrayT
Stalk'd the HUGE FIEND DESPOTIC POW'RU
There REASON clos'd her radiant eyeG
And fainting HOPE retir'd to dieG
Truth shrunk appall'dM
In spells of icy Apathy enthrall'dM
Till FREEDOM spurn'd the ignominious chainI
And roused from Superstition's nightM
Exulting Nature claim'd her rightM
And call'd dire Vengeance from her dark domainI
-
Now take thy solitary flightM
Amid the turbid gales of nightM
Where Spectres starting from the tombV
Glide along th' impervious gloomV
Or stretch'd upon the sea beat shoreW
Let the wild winds as they roarW
Rock Thee on thy Bed of StoneX
Or in gelid caverns pentM
Listen to the sullen moanX
Of subterranean winds or glut thy sightM
Where stupendous mountains rentM
Hurl their vast fragments from their dizzy heightM
-
At Thy approach the rifted PineY
Shall o'er the shatter'd Rock inclineY
Whose trembling brow with wild weeds drestM
Frowns on the tawny EAGLE's nestM
THERE enjoy the 'witching hourS
And freeze in Frenzy's dire conceitM
Or seek the Screech owl's lone retreatM
On the bleak rampart of some nodding Tow'rU
In some forest long and drearU
Tempt the fierce BANDITTI's rageZ
War with famish'd Tygers wageZ
And mock the taunts of FearU
-
When across the yawning deepA2
The Demons of the Tempest sweepA2
Or deaf'ning Thunders bursting castM
Their red bolts on the shivering mastM
While fix'd below the sea boy standsB2
As threat'ning Death his soul dismaysC2
He lifts his supplicating handsB2
And shrieks and groans and weeps and praysC2
Till lost amid the floating fireU
The agonizing crew expireU
THEN let thy transports rend the airU
For mad'ning Anguish feeds DESPAIRU
-
When o'er the couch of pale DiseaseD2
The MOTHER bends with tearful eyeG
And trembles lest her quiv'ring sighG
Should wake the darling of her breastM
Now by the taper's feeble raysC2
She steals a last fond eager gazeC2
Ah hapless Parent gaze no moreU
Thy CHERUB soars among the BlestM
Life's crimson Fount begins to freezeD2
His transitory scene is o'erU
-
She starts she raves her burning brainI
Consumes unconscious of its firesE2
Dead to the Heart's convulsive PainI
Bewilder'd Memory retiresF2
See See she grasps her flowing hairU
From her fix'd eye the big drops rollG2
Her proud Affliction mocks controulG2
And riots in DESPAIRU
Such are thy haunts malignant Pow'rU
There all thy murd'rous Poisons pourU
But come not near my calm retreatM
Where Peace and holy FRIENDSHIP meetM
Where SCIENCE sheds a gentle rayU
And guiltless Mirth beguiles the dayU
Where Bliss congenial to the MUSEH2
Shall round my Heart her sweets diffuseI2
Where from each restless Passion freeU
I give my noiseless hours BLESS'D POETRY TO THEEU
