TERRIFIC FIEND thou Monster fell	A
Condemn'd in haunts profane to dwell	A
Why quit thy solitary Home	B
O'er wide Creation's paths to roam	B
Pale Tyrant of the timid Heart	C
Whose visionary spells can bind	D
The strongest passions of the mind	D
Freezing Life's current with thy baneful Art	C

Nature recoils when thou art near	E
For round thy form all plagues are seen	F
Thine is the frantic tone the sullen mien	F
The glance of petrifying fear	E
The haggard Brow the low'ring Eye	G
The hollow Cheek the smother'd Sigh	G
When thy usurping fangs assail	H
The sacred Bonds of Friendship fail	H
Meek bosom'd Pity sues in vain	I
Imperious Sorrow spurns relief	J
Feeds on the luxury of Grief	J
Drinks the hot Tear and hugs the galling Chain	I

AH plunge no more thy ruthless dart	C
In the dark centre of the guilty Heart	C
The POW'R SUPREME with pitying eye	G
Looks on the erring Child of Misery	K
MERCY arrests the wing of Time	L
To expiate the wretch's crime	L
Insulted HEAV'N consign'd thy brand	M
To the first Murd'rer's crimson hand	M
Swift o'er the earth the Monster flew	N
And round th' ensanguin'd Poisons threw	N
By CONSCIENCE goaded driven by FEAR	E
Till the meek Cherub HOPE subdued his fell career	E

Thy Reign is past when erst the brave	O
Imbib'd contagion o'er the midnight lamp	P
Close pent in loathsome cells where poisons damp	P
Hung round the confines of a Living Grave	O
Where no glimm'ring ray illum'd	M
The flinty walls where pond'rous chains	Q
Bound the wan Victim to the humid earth	R
Where VALOUR GENIUS TASTE and WORTH	R
In pestilential caves entomb'd	M
Sought thy cold arms and smiling mock'd their pains	Q

THERE each procrastinated hour	S
The woe worn suff'rer gasping lay	T
While by his side in proud array	T
Stalk'd the HUGE FIEND DESPOTIC POW'R	U
There REASON clos'd her radiant eye	G
And fainting HOPE retir'd to die	G
Truth shrunk appall'd	M
In spells of icy Apathy enthrall'd	M
Till FREEDOM spurn'd the ignominious chain	I
And roused from Superstition's night	M
Exulting Nature claim'd her right	M
And call'd dire Vengeance from her dark domain	I

Now take thy solitary flight	M
Amid the turbid gales of night	M
Where Spectres starting from the tomb	V
Glide along th' impervious gloom	V
Or stretch'd upon the sea beat shore	W
Let the wild winds as they roar	W
Rock Thee on thy Bed of Stone	X
Or in gelid caverns pent	M
Listen to the sullen moan	X
Of subterranean winds or glut thy sight	M
Where stupendous mountains rent	M
Hurl their vast fragments from their dizzy height	M

At Thy approach the rifted Pine	Y
Shall o'er the shatter'd Rock incline	Y
Whose trembling brow with wild weeds drest	M
Frowns on the tawny EAGLE's nest	M
THERE enjoy the 'witching hour	S
And freeze in Frenzy's dire conceit	M
Or seek the Screech owl's lone retreat	M
On the bleak rampart of some nodding Tow'r	U
In some forest long and drear	U
Tempt the fierce BANDITTI's rage	Z
War with famish'd Tygers wage	Z
And mock the taunts of Fear	U

When across the yawning deep	A2
The Demons of the Tempest sweep	A2
Or deaf'ning Thunders bursting cast	M
Their red bolts on the shivering mast	M
While fix'd below the sea boy stands	B2
As threat'ning Death his soul dismays	C2
He lifts his supplicating hands	B2
And shrieks and groans and weeps and prays	C2
Till lost amid the floating fire	U
The agonizing crew expire	U
THEN let thy transports rend the air	U
For mad'ning Anguish feeds DESPAIR	U

When o'er the couch of pale Disease	D2
The MOTHER bends with tearful eye	G
And trembles lest her quiv'ring sigh	G
Should wake the darling of her breast	M
Now by the taper's feeble rays	C2
She steals a last fond eager gaze	C2
Ah hapless Parent gaze no more	U
Thy CHERUB soars among the Blest	M
Life's crimson Fount begins to freeze	D2
His transitory scene is o'er	U

She starts she raves her burning brain	I
Consumes unconscious of its fires	E2
Dead to the Heart's convulsive Pain	I
Bewilder'd Memory retires	F2
See See she grasps her flowing hair	U
From her fix'd eye the big drops roll	G2
Her proud Affliction mocks controul	G2
And riots in DESPAIR	U
Such are thy haunts malignant Pow'r	U
There all thy murd'rous Poisons pour	U
But come not near my calm retreat	M
Where Peace and holy FRIENDSHIP meet	M
Where SCIENCE sheds a gentle ray	U
And guiltless Mirth beguiles the day	U
Where Bliss congenial to the MUSE	H2
Shall round my Heart her sweets diffuse	I2
Where from each restless Passion free	U
I give my noiseless hours BLESS'D POETRY TO THEE	U
