EXULTING BEAUTY phantom of an hourA
Whose magic spells enchain the heartB
Ah what avails thy fascinating pow'rC
Thy thrilling smile thy witching artB
Thy lip where balmy nectar glowsD
Thy cheek where round the damask roseD
A thousand nameless Graces moveE
Thy mildly speaking azure eyesF
Thy golden hair where cunning LoveG
In many a mazy ringlet liesF
Soon as thy radiant form is seenH
Thy native blush thy timid mienH
Thy hour is past thy charms are vainI
ILL NATURE haunts thee with her sallow trainI
Mean JEALOUSY deceives thy list'ning earJ
And SLANDER stains thy cheek with many a bitter tearK
-
In calm retirement form'd to dwellL
NATURE thy handmaid fair and kindM
For thee a beauteous garland twin'dM
The vale nurs'd Lily's downcast bellL
Thy modest mien display'dN
The snow drop April's meekest childO
With myrtle blossoms undefil'dO
Thy mild and spotless mind pourtray'dO
Dear blushing maid of cottage birthP
'Twas thine o'er dewy meads to strayQ
While sparkling health and frolic mirthP
Led on thy laughing DayQ
-
Lur'd by the babbling tongue of FAMER
Too soon insidious FLATT'RY cameR
Flush'd VANITY her footsteps ledO
To charm thee from thy blest reposeD
While Fashion twin'd about thy headO
A wreath of wounding woesD
See Dissipation smoothly glideO
Cold Apathy and puny PrideO
Capricious Fortune dull and blindO
O'er splendid Folly throws her veilS
While Envy's meagre tribe assailS
Thy gentle form and spotless mindO
-
Their spells prevail no more those eyesF
Shoot undulating firesT
On thy wan cheek the young rose diesF
Thy lip's deep tint expiresT
Dark Melancholy chills thy mindO
Thy silent tear reveals thy woeU
TIME strews with thorns thy mazy wayQ
Where'er thy giddy footsteps strayQ
Thy thoughtless heart is doom'd to findO
An unrelenting foeU
-
'Tis thus the infant Forest flow'rC
Bespangled o'er with glitt'ring dewO
At breezy morn's refreshing hourA
Glows with pure tints of varying hueO
Beneath an aged oak's wide spreading shadeO
Where no rude winds or beating storms invadeO
Transplanted from its lonely bedO
No more it scatters perfumes roundO
No more it rears its gentle headO
Or brightly paints the mossy groundO
For ah the beauteous bud too soonV
Scorch'd by the burning eye of dayQ
Shrinks from the sultry glare of noonV
Droops its enamell'd brow and blushing dies awayQ
