Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCAABBDEFDGHGHII JKKJLL MNNMOOOO PLPLQRQR STTAAOOSOIOI

WHERE o'er my head the deaf'ning Tempest blewA
And Night's cold lamp cast forth a feeble rayB
Where o'er the woodlands vivid light'nings flewA
Cleft the strong oak and scorch'd the blossom'd sprayB
At morn's approach I mark the sun's warm glowC
O'er the grey hill a crimson radiance throwC
I mark the silv'ry fragrant dewA
Give lustre to the vi'let's hueA
The shallow rivers o'er their pebbly wayB
In slow meanders murmuring playB
Day spreads her beams the lofty forest treeD
Shakes from its moisten'd head the pearly show'rE
All nature feels the renovating hourF
All but the sorrowing child of cold ADVERSITYD
For her the linnet's downy throatG
Breathes harmony in vainH
Unmov'd she hears the warbling noteG
In all the melody of song complainH
By her unmark'd the flowret's bloomI
In vain the landscape sheds perfumeI
Her languid form on earth's damp bedJ
In coarse and tatter'd garb reclinesK
In silent agony she pinesK
Or if she hears some stranger's treadJ
To a dark nook ashamed she fliesL
And with her scanty robe o'er shades her weeping eyesL
-
Her hair dishevel'd wildly playsM
With every freezing galeN
While down her cold cheek deadly paleN
The tear of pensive sorrow straysM
She shuns the PITY of the proudO
Her mind still triumphs unsubdu'dO
Nor stoops its misery to obtrudeO
Upon the vulgar croudO
-
Unheeded and unknownP
To some bleak wilderness she fliesL
And seated on a moss clad stoneP
Unwholesome vapours round her riseL
And hang their mischiefs on her browQ
The ruffian winds her limbs exposeR
Still still her heart disdains to bowQ
She cherishes her woesR
-
NOW FAMINE spreads her sable wingsS
INGRATITUDE insults her pangsT
While from a thousand eager fangsT
Madd'ning she flies The recreant crewA
With taunting smiles her steps pursueA
While on her burning bleeding heartO
Fresh wounded by Affliction's dartO
NEGLECT her icy poison flingsS
From HOPE's celestial bosom hurl'dO
She seeks oblivion's gloomI
Now now she mocks the barb'rous worldO
AND TRIUMPHS IN THE TOMBI
