Ode On Adversity Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCAABBDEFDGHGHII JKKJLL MNNMOOOO PLPLQRQR STTAAOOSOIOIWHERE o'er my head the deaf'ning Tempest blew | A |
And Night's cold lamp cast forth a feeble ray | B |
Where o'er the woodlands vivid light'nings flew | A |
Cleft the strong oak and scorch'd the blossom'd spray | B |
At morn's approach I mark the sun's warm glow | C |
O'er the grey hill a crimson radiance throw | C |
I mark the silv'ry fragrant dew | A |
Give lustre to the vi'let's hue | A |
The shallow rivers o'er their pebbly way | B |
In slow meanders murmuring play | B |
Day spreads her beams the lofty forest tree | D |
Shakes from its moisten'd head the pearly show'r | E |
All nature feels the renovating hour | F |
All but the sorrowing child of cold ADVERSITY | D |
For her the linnet's downy throat | G |
Breathes harmony in vain | H |
Unmov'd she hears the warbling note | G |
In all the melody of song complain | H |
By her unmark'd the flowret's bloom | I |
In vain the landscape sheds perfume | I |
Her languid form on earth's damp bed | J |
In coarse and tatter'd garb reclines | K |
In silent agony she pines | K |
Or if she hears some stranger's tread | J |
To a dark nook ashamed she flies | L |
And with her scanty robe o'er shades her weeping eyes | L |
- | |
Her hair dishevel'd wildly plays | M |
With every freezing gale | N |
While down her cold cheek deadly pale | N |
The tear of pensive sorrow strays | M |
She shuns the PITY of the proud | O |
Her mind still triumphs unsubdu'd | O |
Nor stoops its misery to obtrude | O |
Upon the vulgar croud | O |
- | |
Unheeded and unknown | P |
To some bleak wilderness she flies | L |
And seated on a moss clad stone | P |
Unwholesome vapours round her rise | L |
And hang their mischiefs on her brow | Q |
The ruffian winds her limbs expose | R |
Still still her heart disdains to bow | Q |
She cherishes her woes | R |
- | |
NOW FAMINE spreads her sable wings | S |
INGRATITUDE insults her pangs | T |
While from a thousand eager fangs | T |
Madd'ning she flies The recreant crew | A |
With taunting smiles her steps pursue | A |
While on her burning bleeding heart | O |
Fresh wounded by Affliction's dart | O |
NEGLECT her icy poison flings | S |
From HOPE's celestial bosom hurl'd | O |
She seeks oblivion's gloom | I |
Now now she mocks the barb'rous world | O |
AND TRIUMPHS IN THE TOMB | I |
