My OBERON with ev'ry spriteA
That gilds the vapours of the nightA
Shall dance and weave the verdant ringB
With joy that mortals thus can singB
And when thou sigh'st MARIA'S nameC
And mourn'st to feel a hopeless flameC
Eager they'll catch the tender noteD
Just parting from thy tuneful throatD
And bear it to the careless earE
Of her who scorn'd a lover's tearF
-
QUEEN OF THE FARIES TO IL FERITOD
-
-
SWEET MAB at thy command I flewG
O'er glittering floods of midnight dewG
O'er many a silken violet's headD
Unpress'd by vulgar mortal treadD
Eager to execute thy willH
I mounted on the ZEPHYR'S wingB
And bid her whisp'ring tongue be stillH
Nor thro' the air its murmurs flingB
-
Cold CYNTHIA hid her silver bowI
Beneath her azure spangled vestD
No gentle ray my wand'rings blestD
Save the small night worm's twinkling glowJ
Upon the budding thorn I foundD
A veil of gossamer which boundD
My tiny head about my waistD
A scarf of magic pow'r I threwG
With many a crystal dew drop grac'dD
And deck'd with leaves of various hueG
-
Thus gaily dress'd I reach'd the groveK
Where like the Paphian Queen of LoveL
Upon a bank of lillies fairF
MARIA slept the am'rous airF
Snatch'd nectar from her balmy lipsM
Sweeter than haughty JUNO sipsM
When GANYMEDE her goblet fillsN
With juice the citron bud distillsN
-
Her breast was whiter than the downO
That on the RING DOVE'S bosom growsP
Her cheek more blushing than the roseP
That blooms on FLORA'S May day crownO
Beneath her dark and fringed lidD
I spy'd LOVE'S glittering arrows hidD
I listen'd to the dulcet songQ
That trembled on her tuneful tongueR
And IL FERITO i was the soundD
The babbling echo whisper'd roundD
The blissful moment swift I caughtD
And to the maiden's slumb'ring thoughtD
Pictur'd the graces of his mindD
His taste his eloquence refin'dD
-
His polish'd manners sweetly mildD
His soft poetic warblings wildD
His warm impassion'd verse that fillsN
The soul with Love's extatic thrillsN
I mark'd the blush upon her cheekS
Her spotless bosom's language speakS
I mark'd the tear of pity rollT
Sweet emblem of her feeling soulT
I heard the sympathetic sighU
Upon her lips vermilion dieU
When busy LOVE too eager spedD
His light steps near the charmer's bedD
His pinions rustling thro' the airF
Awoke the trembling spotless fairF
Swiftly her radiant eyes uncloseN
When on my filmy wing I roseN
Sweet MAB the rapt'rous tale to bearF
TO IL FERITO'S GRATEFUL EARE
