Chill penury repress'd his noble rageA
And froze the genial current of his soulB
GRAYC
-
-
IF GRIEF can deprecate the wrath of HeavenD
Or human frailty hope to be forgivenD
Ere now thy sainted spirit bends its wayC
To the bland regions of celestial dayC
Ere now thy soul immers'd in purest airE
Smiles at the triumphs of supreme DespairE
Or bath'd in seas of endless bliss disdainsF
The vengeful memory of mortal painsF
Yet shall the MUSE a fond memorial giveG
To shield thy name and bid thy GENIUS liveH
-
Too proud for pity and too poor for praiseI
No voice to cherish and no hand to raiseI
Torn stung and sated with this mortal coilJ
This weary anxious scene of fruitless toilJ
Not all the graces that to youth belongK
Nor all the energies of sacred songK
Nor all that FANCY all that GENIUS gaveL
Could snatch thy wounded spirit from the graveL
-
Hard was thy lot from every comfort tornM
In POVERTY'S cold arms condemn'd to mournM
To live by mental toil e'en when the brainN
Could scarce its trembling faculties sustainN
To mark the dreary minutes slowly creepO
Each day to labour and each night to weepO
'Till the last murmur of thy frantic soulB
In proud concealment from its mansion stoleB
While ENVY springing from her lurid caveL
Snatch'd the young LAURELS from thy rugged graveL
So the pale primrose sweetest bud of MayC
Scarce wakes to beauty ere it feels decayC
While baleful weeds their hidden n poisons pourP
Choke the green sod and wither every flow'rQ
-
Immur'd in shades from busy scenes remov'dR
No sound to solace but the verse he lov'dS
No soothing numbers harmoniz'd his earT
No feeling bosom gave his griefs a tearE
Obscurely born no gen'rous friend he foundU
To lead his trembling steps o'er classic groundU
No patron fill'd his heart with flatt'ring hopeV
No tutor'd lesson gave his genius scopeV
Yet while poetic ardour nerv'd each thoughtW
And REASON sanction'd what AMBITION taughtW
He soar'd beyond the narrow spells that bindX
The slow perceptions of the vulgar mindX
The fire once kindled by the breath of FAMEY
Her restless pinions fann'd the glitt'ring flameY
Warm'd by its rays he thought each vision justZ
For conscious VIRTUE seldom feels DISTRUSTZ
-
Frail are the charms delusive FANCY showsA2
And short the bliss her fickle smile bestowsA2
Yet the bright prospect pleas'd his dazzled viewB2
Each HOPE seem'd ripened and each PHANTOM trueB2
Fill'd with delight his unsuspecting mindX
Weigh'd not the grov'ling treach'ries of mankindX
For while a niggard boon his Savants supply'dX
And NATURE'S claims subdued the voice of PRIDEX
His timid talents own'd a borrow'd nameY
And gain'd by FICTION what was due to FAMEY
-
With secret labour and with taste refin'dX
This son of mis'ry form'd his infant mindX
When op'ning Reason's earliest scenes beganC2
The dawn of childhood mark'd the future manC2
He scorn'd the puerile sports of vulgar boysD2
His little heart aspir'd to nobler joysD2
Creative Fancy wing'd his few short hoursE2
While soothing Hope adorn'd his path with flow'rsE2
Yet FAME'S recording hand no trophy gaveL
Save the sad TEAR to decorate his graveL
-
Yet in this dark mysterious scene of woeF2
Conviction's flame shall shed a radiant glowF2
His infant MUSE shall bind with nerves of fireG2
The sacrilegious hand that stabs its sireG2
Methinks I hear his wand'ring shade complainN
While mournful ECHO lingers on the strainN
Thro' the lone aisle his restless spirit callsE2
His phantom glides along the minster's wallsE2
Where many an hour his devious footsteps trodX
Ere Fate resign'd him TO HIS PITYING GODX
-
Yet shall the MUSE to gentlest sorrow proneH2
Adopt his cause and make his griefs her ownH2
Ne'er shall her CHATTERTON's neglected nameY
Fade in inglorious dreams of doubtful fameY
Shall he whose pen immortal GENIUS gaveL
Sleep unlamented in an unknown graveL
No the fond MUSE shall spurn the base neglectX
The verse she cherish'd she shall still protectX
-
And if unpitied pangs the mind can moveI2
Or graceful numbers warm the heart to loveJ2
If the fine raptures of poetic fireG2
Delight to vibrate on the trembling lyreK2
If sorrow claims the kind embalming tearE
Or worth oppress'd excites a pang sincereL2
Some kindred soul shall pour the song divineM2
And with the cypress bough the laurel twineM2
Whose weeping leaves the wint'ry blast shall waveL
In mournful murmurs o'er thy unbless'd graveL
-
And tho' no lofty VASE or sculptur'd BUSTX
Bends o'er the sod that hides thy sacred dustX
Tho' no long line of ancestry betraysE2
The PRIDE of RELATIVES or POMP of PRAISEE2
Tho' o'er thy name a blushing nation rearsE2
OBLIVION'S wing to hide REFLECTION'S tearsE2
Still shall thy verse in dazzling lustre liveH
And claim a brighter wreath THAN WEALTH CAN GIVEG
