THOU art no more my bosom's FRIENDA
Here must the sweet delusion endA
That charm'd my senses many a yearB
Thro' smiling summers winters drearB
O FRIENDSHIP am I doom'd to findC
Thou art a phantom of the mindC
A glitt'ring shade an empty nameD
An air born vision's vap'rish flameD
And yet the dear DECEIT so longE
Has wak'd to joy my matin songE
Has bid my tears forget to flowF
Chas'd ev'ry pain soothed ev'ry woeF
That TRUTH unwelcome to my earB
Swells the deep sigh recalls the tearB
Gives to the sense the keenest smartG
Checks the warm pulses of the HeartG
Darkens my FATE and steals awayH
Each gleam of joy thro' life's sad dayH
-
BRITAIN FAREWELL I quit thy shoreB
My native Country charms no moreB
No guide to mark the toilsome roadI
No destin'd clime no fix'd abodeI
Alone and sad ordain'd to traceJ
The vast expanse of endless spaceJ
To view upon the mountain's heightK
Thro' varied shades of glimm'ring lightK
The distant landscape fade awayH
In the last gleam of parting dayH
Or on the quiv'ring lucid streamL
To watch the pale moon's silv'ry beamL
Or when in sad and plaintive strainsM
The mournful PHILOMEL complainsM
In dulcet notes bewails her fateN
And murmurs for her absent mateN
Inspir'd by SYMPATHY divineO
I'll weep her woes FOR THEY ARE MINEO
Driven by my FATE where'er I goF
O'er burning plains o'er hills of snowF
Or on the bosom of the waveP
The howling tempest doom'd to braveP
Where'er my lonely course I bendA
Thy image shall my steps attendA
Each object I am doom'd to seeQ
Shall bid remem'brance PICTURE THEEQ
-
Yes I shall view thee in each FLOW'RB
That changes with the transient hourB
Thy wand'ring Fancy I shall findC
Borne on the wings of every WINDC
Thy wild impetuous passions traceJ
O'er the white wave's tempestuous spaceJ
In every changing season proveR
An emblem of thy wav'ring LOVES
-
Torn from my country friends and youT
The World lies open to my viewT
New objects shall my mind engageU
I will explore th' HISTORIC pageU
Sweet POETRY shall soothe my soulV
PHILOSOPHY each pang controulV
The MUSE I'll seek her lambent fireB
My soul's quick senses shall inspireB
With finer nerves my heart shall beatW
Touch'd by Heaven's own PROMETHEAN heatW
ITALIA'S gales shall bear my songE
In soft link'd notes her woods amongX
Upon the blue hill's misty sideY
Thro' trackless desarts waste and wideY
O'er craggy rocks whose torrents flowV
Upon the silver sands belowV
Sweet Land of MELODY 'tis thineO
The softest passions to refineO
Thy myrtle groves thy melting strainsM
Shall harmonize and soothe my painsM
Nor will I cast one thought behindC
On foes relentless FRIENDS unkindC
I feel I feel their poison'd dartG
Pierce the life nerve within my heartG
'Tis mingled with the vital heatW
That bids my throbbing pulses beatW
Soon shall that vital heat be o'erB
Those throbbing pulses beat no moreB
-
No I will breathe the spicy galeV
Plunge the clear stream new health exhaleV
O'er my pale cheek diffuse the roseZ
And drink OBLIVION to my woesZ
