WHERE on the bosom of the foamy RHINEA
In curling waves the rapid waters shineA
Where tow'ring cliffs in awful grandeur riseB
And midst the blue expanse embrace the skiesB
The wond'ring eye beholds yon craggy heightC
Ting'd with the glow of Evening's fading lightC
Where the fierce cataract swelling o'er its boundD
Bursts from its source and dares the depth profoundD
On ev'ry side the headlong currents flowE
Scatt'ring their foam like silv'ry sands belowE
From hill to hill responsive echoes soundD
Loud torrents roar and dashing waves reboundD
Th' opposing rock the azure stream dividesF
The white froth tumbling down its sparry sidesF
From fall to fall the glitt'ring channels flowE
'Till lost they mingle in the Lake belowE
Tremendous spot amid thy views sublimeG
The mental sight ethereal realms may climbG
With wonder rapt the mighty work exploreH
Confess TH' ETERNAL'S pow'r and pensively adoreH
-
ALL VARYING NATURE oft the outstretch'd eyeI
Marks o'er the WELKIN's brow the meteor flyI
Marks where the COMET with impetuous forceJ
O'er Heaven's wide concave skims its fiery courseJ
While on the ALPINE steep thin vapours riseB
Float on the blast or freeze amidst the skiesB
Or half congeal'd in flaky fragments glideK
Along the gelid mountain's breezy sideK
Or mingling with the waste of yielding snowE
From the vast height in various currents flowE
-
Now pale ey'd MORNING at thy soft commandL
O'er the rich landscape spreads her dewy handL
Swift o'er the plain the lucid rivers flyI
Imperfect mirrors of the dappled skyI
On the fring'd margin of the dimpling tideK
Each od'rous bud by FLORA'S pencil dy'dK
Expands its velvet leaves of lust'rous hueM
Bath'd in the essence of celestial dewM
While from the METEOR to the simplest FLOW RN
Prolific Nature we behold thy pow'rN
Yet has mysterious Heaven with care consign'dO
Thy noblest triumphs to the human mindO
MAN feels the proud preeminence impartP
Intrepid firmness to his swelling heartP
Creation's lord where'er HE bends his wayQ
The torch of REASON spreads its godlike rayQ
-
As o'er SIClLlAN sands the Trav'ler rovesB
Feeds on its fruits and shelters in its grovesB
Sudden amidst the calm retreat he hearsB
The pealing thunders in the distant spheresB
He sees the curling fumes from ETNA riseB
Shade the green vale and blacken all the skiesB
Around his head the forked lightnings glareR
The vivid streams illume the stagnant airR
The nodding hills hang low'ring o'er the deepS
The howling winds the clust'ring vineyards sweepS
The cavern'd rocks terrific tremours rendP
Low to the earth the tawny forests bendP
While He an ATOM in the direful sceneT
Views the wild CHAOS wond'ring and sereneT
Tho' at his feet sulphureous rivers rollU
No touch of terror shakes his conscious soulU
His MIND enlighten'd by PROMETHEAN raysB
Expanding glows with intellectual blazeB
-
Such scenes long since th' immortal POET charm'dP
His MUSE enraptur'd and his FANCY warm'dP
From them he learnt with magic eye t' exploreH
The dire ARCANUM of the STYGIAN shoreH
Where the departed spirit trembling hurl'dP
With restless violence round the pendent worldP
On the swift wings of whistling whirlwinds flungV
Plung'd in the wave or on the mountain hungV
-
While o'er yon cliff the ling'ring fires of dayP
In ruby shadows faintly glide awayP
The glassy source that feeds the CATARACT's streamW
Bears the last image of the solar beamW
Wide o'er the Landscape Nature's tints discloseB
The softest picture of sublime reposeB
The sober beauties of EVE'S hour sereneT
The scatter'd village now but dimly seenT
The neighb'ring rock whose flinty brow inclin'dP
Shields the clay cottage from the northern windP
The variegated woodlands scarce we viewM
The distant mountains ting'd with purple hueM
Pale twilight flings her mantle o'er the skiesB
From the still lake the misty vapours riseB
Cold show'rs descending on the western breezeB
Sprinkle with lucid drops the bending treesB
Whose spreading branches o'er the glade reclin'dP
Wave their dank leaves and murmur to the windP
-
Such scenes O LOUTHERBOURG thy pencil fir'dP
Warm'd thy great mind and every touch inspir'dP
Beneath thy hand the varying colours glowE
Vast mountains rise and crystal rivers flowE
Thy wond'rous Genius owns no pedant ruleX
Nature's thy guide and Nature's works thy schoolX
Pursue her steps each rival's art defyI
For while she charms THY NAME shall never dieI
