Rhyme Scheme: AB C DDEEFFGG HHIIJBKKEELL MMEENNOOAAPPQQRR

What is this world thy school O miseryA
Our only lesson is to learn to sufferB
-
YOUNGC
-
-
LOVE thou sportive fickle boyD
Source of anguish child of joyD
Ever wounding ever smilingE
Soothing still and still beguilingE
What are all thy boasted treasuresF
Tender sorrows transient pleasuresF
Anxious hopes and jealous fearsG
LAUGHING HOURS and MOURNING YEARSG
-
What is FRIENDSHIP'S soothing nameH
But a shad'wy vap'rish flameH
Fancy's balm for ev'ry woundI
Ever sought but rarely foundI
What is BEAUTY but a flow'rJ
Blooming fading in an hourB
Deck'd with brightest tints at mornK
At twilight with'ring on a thornK
Like the gentle Rose of springE
Chill'd by ev'ry zephyr's wingE
Ah how soon its colour fliesL
Blushes trembles falls and diesL
-
What is YOUTH a smiling sorrowM
Blithe to day and sad to morrowM
Never fix'd for ever rangingE
Laughing weeping doating changingE
Wild capricious giddy vainN
Cloy'd with pleasure nurs'd with painN
AGE steals on with wint'ry faceO
Ev'ry rapt'rous Hope to chaseO
Like a wither'd sapless treeA
Bow'd to chilling Fate's decreeA
Strip'd of all its foliage gayP
Drooping at the close of dayP
What of tedious Life remainsQ
Keen regrets and cureless painsQ
Till DEATH appears a welcome friendR
To bid the scene of sorrow endR
