WHEN will my troubled soul have restA
The beauteous LEWIN criedB
As thro' the murky shade of nightC
With frantic step she hiedC
-
When shall those eyes my GYNNETH'S faceD
My GYNNETH'S form surveyE
When shall those longing eyes againF
Behold the dawn of dayE
-
Cold are the dews that wet my cheekG
The night mist damps the groundC
Appalling echoes strike mine earH
And spectres gleam aroundC
-
The vivid lightning's transient raysI
Around my temples playE
'Tis all the light my fate affordsJ
To mark my thorny wayE
-
From the black mountain's awful heightC
Where LATHRYTH'S turrets riseK
The dark owl screams a direful songL
And warns me as she fliesK
-
The chilling blast the whistling windsM
The mould'ring ramparts shakeN
The hungry tenants of the woodC
Their cavern'd haunts forsakeN
-
Those tender limbs unus'd to strayE
Beyond a father's doorO
Full many a mile have journey'd forthP
Each footstep mark'd with goreO
-
No costly sandals deck those feetC
By thorns and briars tornQ
The cold rain chills my rosy cheekG
Whose freshness sham'd the mornQ
-
Slow steals the life stream at my heartC
Dark clouds o'ershade my eyesK
Foreboding sorrow tells my soulR
My captive Lover diesK
-
Yet if one gentle ray of hopeS
Can sooth the soul to restC
Oh may it pierce yon flinty tow'rT
And warm my GYNNETH's breastC
-
And if soft pity's tearful eyeU
A Tyrant's heart can moveV
Ill fated LEWIN yet may liveW
To clasp her vanquish'd LoveX
-
And tho' stern war with bonds of steelY
His graceful form shall bindC
No earthly spell has pow'r to holdC
The freedom of his mindC
-
And tho' his warm and gallant heartC
Now yields to fate's decreeZ
Its feelings spurn the base constraintC
And fly to LOVE and MEZ
-
Then BRANWORTH Lion of the fieldC
O hear a maiden pleadC
Sheath not thy sword in GYNNETH'S breastC
Or too let LEWIN'S bleedC
-
To valiant feats of arms renown'dC
Shall earthly praise be giv'nQ
But deeds of MERCY mighty ChiefA2
Are register'd in HEAV'NQ
-
Thy praises shall resounding fillB2
The Palace of thy foeC2
While down the joyful LEWIN'S cheekG
The grateful tear shall flowC2
-
And sure the tear that VIRTUE shedsD2
Some rapture can impartC
What gem can deck a victor's throneQ
Like incense from the heartC
-
Now the grey Morning's silv'ry lightC
Dawn'd in the eastern skiesK
When at the lofty lattice grateC
Her Lover's form she spiesK
-
He lives she cried My GYNNETH livesE2
Youth of the crimson shieldC
The graceful Hero of my heartC
The glory of the fieldC
-
Come down my soul's delight she saidC
Thy blue ey'd LEWIN seeZ
YRGANVY'S Daughter thy true LoveX
Who only breathes for THEEZ
-
Then haste THEE from thy prison houseF2
Ere yet the Foe doth riseK
Oh haste ere yet the Morning SunQ
Doth flame along the skiesK
-
Ah speak my heart is chill'd with fearG2
My fault'ring voice doth failH2
Why are thy darling eyes so dimI2
Thy cheek so deathly paleH2
-
I am THY GYNNETH'S GHOST sweet maidC
Avoid the madd'ning sightC
Those eyes that doated on thy charmsJ2
Are lock'd in endless nightC
-
This loyal heart which beat for theeZ
Is rent with many a woundC
Cleft is my shield my glitt'ring spearG2
Lies broken on the groundC
-
My bones the eagle hath convey'dC
To feed her rav'nous broodC
The savage BRANWORTH'S cruel handC
Hath spilt my purple bloodC
-
Then hie thee hence ill fated maidC
Ere greater woes betideC
To where LLANGADOC'S silver streamsK2
Along the vallies glideC
-
There where the modest PRIMROSE bloomsL2
Pale as thy lover's shadeC
My mangled relics shalt thou findC
Upon the green turf laidC
-
Then hie thee hence with holy handsM2
Build up a sacred shrineQ
And oh chaste maid thy faith to proveV
Mingle thy dust with mineQ
-
Ah have you seen a mother's joyN2
In cherub sweetness dress'dC
Seiz'd by the numbing hand of deathO2
Expiring at her breastC
-
Or the fond maid whom morrow's dawnQ
Had hail'd a wedded fairP2
Doom'd to behold her lover's corseQ2
Scorch'd by the lightning's glareP2
-
So stood the hopeless frantic maidC
YRGANVY's graceful childC
Cold was her cheek her dove like eyesK
Fix'd in amazement wildC
-
This panting heart at length she criedC
A sharper pang doth feelY
Than thine brave youth when rent in twainQ
By BRANWORTH'S poison'd steelY
-
No more these sad and weeping eyesK
My father's house shall seeZ
Thy kindred spirit calls me henceR2
I haste to follow theeZ
-
Beside thy tomb the TRAV'LLER'S tearP2
Shall join the crystal springS2
Around the solemn dirge of woeC2
Shall sainted DRUIDS singS2
-
The weary PILGRIM faint and sadC
Shall stay his steps awhileT2
The memory of his OWN hard fateC
THY story shall beguileT2
-
There wet with many a holy tearP2
The sweetest buds shall blowC2
There LEWIN'S ghost shall mark the shrineQ
A monument of woeC2
-
Thrice did he ope the lattice grateC
And thrice he bade adieuC
When lo to join the parting shadeC
The MAIDEN'S SPIRIT FLEWC
