NEAR yon bleak mountain's dizzy heightA
That hangs o'er AVON's silent waveB
By the pale Crescent's glimm'ring lightA
I sought LORENZO's lonely graveB
-
O'er the long grass the silv'ry dewC
Soft Twilight's tears spontaneous shoneD
And the dank bough of baneful yewC
Supply'd the place of sculptured stoneD
-
Oft as my trembling steps drew nearE
The a ry voice of FANCY gaveB
The plaint of GENIUS to mine earF
That lingering murmur'd on his graveB
-
Cold is that heart where honour glow'dG
And Friendship's flame sublimely shoneD
And clos'd that eye where Pity flow'dG
For ev'ry suff'ring but HIS OWND
-
That form where youth and grace conspir'dH
To captivate admiring eyesI
No more belov'd no more admir'dH
A torpid mass neglected liesI
-
Mute is the music of that tongueJ
Once tuneful as the voice of loveK
When ORPHEUS by his magic songL
Taught trees and flinty rocks to moveM
-
Oft shall the pensive MUSE be foundN
Sprinkling with flow'rs his mould'ring clayO
While soft eyed SORROW wand'ring roundN
Shall pluck intruding weeds awayO
-
Sad victim of the sordid mindP
That doom'd THEE to an early graveB
Ne'er shall HER breast that pity findP
Which thy forgiveness nobly gaveB
-
Thou who when SORROW'S icy handQ
Forbad the healthsome pulse to flowR
Obedient to HER stern commandQ
With meek submission bow'd thee lowR
-
And when thy faded cheek proclaim'dS
The thorn that rankled in thy breastT
Thy steady soul that pride maintain'dU
Which marks the godlike mind distress'dT
-
Nor was thy mental strength subdu'dV
When HOPE's last ling'ring shadows fledW
Unchang'd thy dauntless spirit view'dV
The dreary confines of the deadW
-
And when thy penetrating mindP
Life's thorny maze presum'd to scanX
In ev'ry path condemn'd to findP
The low ingratitude of manX
-
Indignant would'st thou turn awayO
And smiling raise thy languid eyeY
And oft thy feeble voice would sayO
TO ME 'TIS HAPPINESS TO DIEY
-
And tho' thy FRIEND I with skilful artZ
To heal thy woes each balm apply'dZ
Tho' the fine feelings of his heartZ
Nor cost nor studious care deny'dZ
-
He saw the fatal hour draw nearE
He saw THEE fading to the graveB
He gave his last kind gift A TEARA2
And mourn'd the worth he could not saveB
-
Nor could the ruthless breath of FATEZ
Snatch from thy grave the tender sighY
Nor a relentless monster's hateZ
Impede thy passage to the skyY
-
And tho' no kindred tears were shedZ
No tribute to thy memory giv'nX
Sublime in death thy spirit fledZ
To seek its best reward IN HEAVENX
