THE knell of death that on the twilight galeA
Swells its deep murmur to the pensive earB
In awful sounds repeats a mournful taleA
And claims the tribute of a tender tearC
-
The dreadful hour is past the mandate giv'nD
The gentle MIDDLETON shall breathe no moreE
Yet who shall blame the wise decrees of HeavenD
Or the dark mysteries of Fate exploreE
-
No more her converse shall delight the heartF
No more her smile benign spread pleasure roundG
No more her liberal bosom shall impartF
The balm of pity to Affliction's woundG
-
Her soul above the pride of noble birthH
Above the praises of an empty nameI
By graceful MEEKNESS mark'd superior worthH
By peerless VIRTUES claim'd the fairest fameI
-
Nor did those Virtues flaunt their innate raysJ
To court applause or charm the vulgar throngK
No ostentatious glare illum'd her daysJ
No idle boast escap'd her tuneful tongueL
-
When FAME ambitious to record her praiseJ
On glitt'ring pinions spread her name afarM
Her gentle nature shunn'd the dazzling blazeJ
Mild as the lustre of the morning starM
-
DIVINE BENEVOLENCE around her shoneD
The chastest manners spoke her spotless mindN
That Pow'r who gave now claims her for his ownD
Pure as the cherub she has left behindN
-
As round her couch the winged darts of deathO
Reluctant flew from Fate's unerring bowP
Immortal angels claim'd her quivering breathO
And snatch'd her spirit from a world of woeQ
-
Calm resignation smil'd upon her cheekR
And HOPE'S refulgent beam illum'd her eyeS
While FAITH celestial VIRTUE'S handmaid meekR
On wings of seraphs bore her to the skyS
-
Ye poor who from her gen'rous bounty fedT
Oh to HER mem'ry give the fame that's dueU
For oft from pleasure's blithe meanders ledT
Her pensive bosom felt a pang for YOUU
-
Yet cease to mourn a sainted Spirit goneD
To seek its resting place beyond the skiesV
Where 'midst the glories of TH' ETERNAL's throneD
She tastes celestial bliss THAT NEVER DIESV
