Absence Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEE FGFGHIEE JKJKBGEE LMDMNNEE OPOPQQEE RGRGSSEE

WHEN from the craggy mountain's pathless steepA
Whose flinty brow hangs o'er the raging seaB
My wand'ring eye beholds the foamy deepA
I mark the restless surge and think of THEEB
The curling waves the passing breezes moveC
Changing and treach'rous as the breath of LOVED
The sad similitude awakes my smartE
And thy dear image twines about my heartE
-
When at the sober hour of sinking dayF
Exhausted Nature steals to soft reposeG
When the hush'd linnet slumbers on the sprayF
And scarce a ZEPHYR fans the drooping ROSEG
I glance o'er scenes of bliss to friendship dearH
And at the fond remembrance drop a tearI
Nor can the balmy incense soothe my smartE
Still cureless sorrow preys upon my heartE
-
When the loud gambols of the village throngJ
Drown the lorn murmurs of the ring dove's throatK
I think I hear thy fascinating songJ
Join the melodious minstrel's tuneful noteK
My list'ning ear soon tells me 'tis not THEEB
Nor THY lov'd song nor THY soft minstrelsyG
In vain I turn away to hide my smartE
Thy dulcet numbers vibrate in my heartE
-
When with the Sylvan train I seek the groveL
Where MAY'S soft breath diffuses incense roundM
Where VENUS smiles serene and sportive LOVED
With thornless ROSES spreads the fairy groundM
The voice of pleasure dies upon mine earN
My conscious bosom sighs THOU ART NOT HEREN
Soft tears of fond regret reveal its smartE
And sorrow restless sorrow chills my heartE
-
When at my matin pray'rs I prostrate kneelO
And Court RELIGION's aid to soothe my woeP
The meek ey'd saint who pities what I feelO
Forbids the sigh to heave the tear to flowP
For ah no vulgar passion fills my mindQ
Calm REASON's hand illumes the flame refin'dQ
ALL the pure feelings FRIENDSHIP can impartE
Live in the centre of my aching heartE
-
When at the still and solemn hour of nightR
I press my lonely couch to find reposeG
Joyless I watch the pale moon's chilling lightR
Where thro' the mould'ring tow'r the north wind blowsG
My fev'rish lids no balmy slumbers ownS
Still my sad bosom beats for thee aloneS
Nor shall its aching fibres cease to smartE
'Till DEATH's cold SPELL is twin'd about my HEARTE
