Absence Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEE FGFGHIEE JKJKBGEE LMDMNNEE OPOPQQEE RGRGSSEEWHEN from the craggy mountain's pathless steep | A |
Whose flinty brow hangs o'er the raging sea | B |
My wand'ring eye beholds the foamy deep | A |
I mark the restless surge and think of THEE | B |
The curling waves the passing breezes move | C |
Changing and treach'rous as the breath of LOVE | D |
The sad similitude awakes my smart | E |
And thy dear image twines about my heart | E |
- | |
When at the sober hour of sinking day | F |
Exhausted Nature steals to soft repose | G |
When the hush'd linnet slumbers on the spray | F |
And scarce a ZEPHYR fans the drooping ROSE | G |
I glance o'er scenes of bliss to friendship dear | H |
And at the fond remembrance drop a tear | I |
Nor can the balmy incense soothe my smart | E |
Still cureless sorrow preys upon my heart | E |
- | |
When the loud gambols of the village throng | J |
Drown the lorn murmurs of the ring dove's throat | K |
I think I hear thy fascinating song | J |
Join the melodious minstrel's tuneful note | K |
My list'ning ear soon tells me 'tis not THEE | B |
Nor THY lov'd song nor THY soft minstrelsy | G |
In vain I turn away to hide my smart | E |
Thy dulcet numbers vibrate in my heart | E |
- | |
When with the Sylvan train I seek the grove | L |
Where MAY'S soft breath diffuses incense round | M |
Where VENUS smiles serene and sportive LOVE | D |
With thornless ROSES spreads the fairy ground | M |
The voice of pleasure dies upon mine ear | N |
My conscious bosom sighs THOU ART NOT HERE | N |
Soft tears of fond regret reveal its smart | E |
And sorrow restless sorrow chills my heart | E |
- | |
When at my matin pray'rs I prostrate kneel | O |
And Court RELIGION's aid to soothe my woe | P |
The meek ey'd saint who pities what I feel | O |
Forbids the sigh to heave the tear to flow | P |
For ah no vulgar passion fills my mind | Q |
Calm REASON's hand illumes the flame refin'd | Q |
ALL the pure feelings FRIENDSHIP can impart | E |
Live in the centre of my aching heart | E |
- | |
When at the still and solemn hour of night | R |
I press my lonely couch to find repose | G |
Joyless I watch the pale moon's chilling light | R |
Where thro' the mould'ring tow'r the north wind blows | G |
My fev'rish lids no balmy slumbers own | S |
Still my sad bosom beats for thee alone | S |
Nor shall its aching fibres cease to smart | E |
'Till DEATH's cold SPELL is twin'd about my HEART | E |
