His thundering carA
Is heard from afarA
And his trumpet notes soundB
All the country aroundB
Stop your ears as you willC
That loud blast and shrillC
Is heard by you stillC
Borne along by the galeD
In his frost coat of mailD
Midst snow sleet and hailD
He comes without failD
And drives all before himE
Though men beg and implore himE
Just to let them take breathF
Or he'll drive them to deathF
But he comes in great stateG
And for none will he waitG
Though he sees their distressH
Yet he spares them no lessH
For the cold stiff limbE
Is nothing to himE
And o'er countless blue nosesI
His hard heart he closesI
His own children fear himE
And dare not come near himE
E'en his favorite childJ
Has been known to run wildJ
At his too near approachK
Her fear of him suchL
And to shriek and to howlM
And return scowl for scowlM
Indeed few dare him faceN
And all shun his embraceN
For though pleasant his smileO
Yet one thinks all the whileO
Of that terrible frownP
Which the hardiest clownP
Though a stout hearted manQ
Will avoid if he canQ
And though many maintainR
That he gives needless painR
I confess I admireS
This venerable sireT
True his language is harshU
And his conduct oft rashV
And we know well enoughW
That his manners are roughW
Yet still in the mainR
We've no right to complainR
For if we prepare for himE
And show that we care for himE
We may in him findX
A true friend and kindX
With us he will stayY
Three months to a dayY
So let us prepareZ
The snug elbow chairZ
Which placed by the fireT
For the hoary head sireT
May comfort impartA2
And cheer his old heartA2
Though he seems so unkindX
Yet always you'll findX
That his cold heart will warmB2
And he'll do you no harmC2
If your own can but feelD2
For your poor neighbor's wealD2
And with pity o'erflowingE2
Your free alms bestowingE2
Never closing your doorF2
On the suffering poorG2
But clothe feed and warm themH2
And see that none harm themH2
E'en to others just doI2
As you'd wish them by youI2
Let's adopt but this planQ
To do good when we canQ
And the dark stormy dayY
Will full quick pass awayY
And we never complainR
Of cold weather againJ2
Or of tedious long hoursK2
That are spent within doorsL2
For when winter winds blowD2
And we're hedged up by snowD2
We shall find full employmentM2
And lack no enjoymentM2
Thus prepared let him comeN2
He will find us at homeO2
Bring wind hail or snowD2
Blow high or blow lowD2
We're prepared for him nowP2
Then come winter comeN2
You'll find us at homeO2

There is within this heart of mineR2
An aching void earth ne'er can fillD2
I've tried its joys its friendships provedS2
But felt that aching void there stillD2
-
Thy love alone my Saviour GodT2
True satisfaction can impartA2
Can fill this aching void I feelD2
And give contentment to my heartA2
-
Oh cheer me by thy presence LordU2
Increase my faith an hundred foldV2
Be thy name on my forehead foundB
Mine in thy book of life enrolledV2
