Why dear friends oh tell us whereforeA
You're so anxious to be goneB
Is the country late adoptedC
Dearer to you than your ownD
-
Have you found a father motherA
In that distant clime to loveE
Or a sister friend or brotherA
Better than the long tried proveF
-
Oh no believe us no such motivesG
Prompt us to tempt old ocean's waveH
We go among the poor benightedI
Perhaps to find an early graveH
-
Ah you know not half our anguishJ
Only those who feel can tellK
When we think of the sad partingL
And that solemn word farewellK
-
But while lingering souls are dyingL
Souls that Jesus came to saveH
And of such a priceless valueM
That for them his life he gaveH
-
Trials great no doubt await usN
In that distant home of oursO
Work requiring so much laborA
As to exceed our utmost powersO
-
But He who said 'Go preach the gospel '-
All powerful is to aid defendP
'Lo I am with you always ' said heQ
'And will be even to the end '-
-
With such command and such a promiseN
Sure our path of duty's plainR
Do not then dear friends persuade usN
Longer with thee to remainR
-
Go then go we'll not detain youM
We dare not ask your longer stayS
And may winds and waves of oceanT
Waft you safely on your wayS
-
They who all forsake for JesusN
Father mother country homeU
Here an hundred fold are promisedV
And eternal life to comeW
-
Go then go but when far distantX
Bear us sometimes on your mindY
When for others intercedingL
Forget not those you leave behindY
-
And when your earthly warfare's endedC
And you have laid your armor downZ
May souls of poor benighted AsiaA2
Add many stars to your bright crownZ
