Rhyme Scheme: ABCD AEAF GHIH JKLK LHMH NOAO PQ NRNR MSTS NUVW XYLY CZA2ZWhy dear friends oh tell us wherefore | A |
You're so anxious to be gone | B |
Is the country late adopted | C |
Dearer to you than your own | D |
- | |
Have you found a father mother | A |
In that distant clime to love | E |
Or a sister friend or brother | A |
Better than the long tried prove | F |
- | |
Oh no believe us no such motives | G |
Prompt us to tempt old ocean's wave | H |
We go among the poor benighted | I |
Perhaps to find an early grave | H |
- | |
Ah you know not half our anguish | J |
Only those who feel can tell | K |
When we think of the sad parting | L |
And that solemn word farewell | K |
- | |
But while lingering souls are dying | L |
Souls that Jesus came to save | H |
And of such a priceless value | M |
That for them his life he gave | H |
- | |
Trials great no doubt await us | N |
In that distant home of ours | O |
Work requiring so much labor | A |
As to exceed our utmost powers | O |
- | |
But He who said 'Go preach the gospel ' | - |
All powerful is to aid defend | P |
'Lo I am with you always ' said he | Q |
'And will be even to the end ' | - |
- | |
With such command and such a promise | N |
Sure our path of duty's plain | R |
Do not then dear friends persuade us | N |
Longer with thee to remain | R |
- | |
Go then go we'll not detain you | M |
We dare not ask your longer stay | S |
And may winds and waves of ocean | T |
Waft you safely on your way | S |
- | |
They who all forsake for Jesus | N |
Father mother country home | U |
Here an hundred fold are promised | V |
And eternal life to come | W |
- | |
Go then go but when far distant | X |
Bear us sometimes on your mind | Y |
When for others interceding | L |
Forget not those you leave behind | Y |
- | |
And when your earthly warfare's ended | C |
And you have laid your armor down | Z |
May souls of poor benighted Asia | A2 |
Add many stars to your bright crown | Z |
