FOR MY DAUGHTER MARGARETA
-
-
Very like to a dreamB
Doth the time to me seemB
When with thee a young girl by my sideC
One of summer's fine daysD
In a one pony chaiseD
We commenced in the morning our rideC
-
By the pine grove and nookE
Over bridge and through brookE
Quite at random we drove without fearF
While the birds of the groveG
In sweet harmony stroveG
By their concert of music to cheerF
With none to molest usH
No home cares to press usH
Farther onward and onward we roamI
But at length the skies lowerJ
And unhoped for the showerJ
Finds us many miles distant from homeI
-
Even so is life's dayK
Like a fair morn in MayK
With hope's bright bow of promise it cheersL
But long before nightM
The sun that so brightM
In the morning had shone disappearsL
-
Do not then I entreatM
My beloved MargaretM
Be content with this world for thy portionN
Let ambition soar higherJ
E'en above earth aspireO
And to God give thy heart's true devotionN
