And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the Son of man be lifted upA
-
That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal lifeB
-
St JohnC
-
-
What means that cry of anguishD
That strikes the distant earE
The loud and piercing wailingF
In desert wilds we hearE
-
From Israel's camp it comethG
For Israel hath rebelledH
And these are cries of anguishD
By wrath of God impelledH
-
It is no common sorrowI
Extorts that bitter groanJ
'Tis from the broken heartedK
And caused by sin aloneJ
-
Lo in the far off desertL
Upon that tented groundM
Are many hundred thousandsN
Of weary travellers foundM
-
In desert of ArabiaO
Near forty years they roamP
And soon they are to enterQ
Canaan their happy homeP
-
But come with me and visitR
A people so distressedS
They are the seed that JacobT
When dying pronounced blessedS
-
We'll draw aside the curtainU
Of tent that's nearest byV
Ah what a mournful pictureQ
For stranger's curious eyeV
-
See on that couch recliningF
A young and lovely girlW
With brow and neck half shadedX
By many a clustering curlW
-
She was an only daughterQ
Nurtured with tenderest careY
The idol of her parentsZ
And fairest of the fairY
-
In bloom of youth and beautyA2
But yesterday she shoneJ
And her fond parents thought herQ
A mine of wealth unknownJ
-
She seems like one that sleepethG
But there's no sign of breathG
And coil'd 'neath her arm a serpentB2
Whose bite is certain deathG
-
Yet not alone the mournersC2
In this sad tent are foundM
Shriek after shriek is echoedD2
For many miles aroundM
-
The mother too is bittenU
With infant in her armsE2
And sire in strength of manhoodF2
And bride with all her charmsE2
-
But see on pole suspendedK
A serpent now appearsG2
And hark what blissful tidingsH2
Salute the mourner's earsG2
-
For every one that's bittenU
A remedy is foundM
However bad the case isI2
However deep the woundM
-
If but one spark remainethG
Of life in any soulJ2
Just look upon this serpentB2
That look will make thee wholeJ2
-
But there's a wound that's deeperQ
Than fiery serpent gaveK2
And bite that's doubly fatalL2
It kills beyond the graveK2
-
And there's a great physicianU
That e'en this wound may cureM2
And those to him applyingF
May life and health secureM2
-
The broken heart he healethG
He cures the sin sick soulJ2
And all who will behold himN2
May look and be made wholeJ2
-
I am the way he criethG
And all who will may comeO2
I'll pardon their transgressionU
And safe conduct them homeP
-
To cleanse from all pollutionU
My blood doth freely flowI
And sins though red as scarletR
Shall be as white as snowI
-
Thy ransom to pay for theeG
E'en my own life it costP2
And he such love that slightethG
Forever shall be lostQ2
-
AprilL2
