The Evening Of Life Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

As the shadows of evening around me are fallingA
With its dark sombre curtain outspreadB
And night's just at hand chilly night so appallingA
And day's brilliant sunshine hath fledB
-
It is e'en so with me for the eve of my dayB
Has arrived yet I scarcely know howC
Bright morn hath departed and noon passed awayB
And 'tis evening pale eve with me nowC
-
Oh where are the friends who in life's early mornD
With me did their journey commenceE
Some are estranged while some few still remainF
And others departed long sinceG
-
And when I too like them shall be summoned awayB
And the shadows of death on me fallH
Be thou the Great Shepherd of Israel but nearI
My Saviour my God and my allH
-
And though the dark valley we all must pass throughJ
Yet surely no evil can harmK
The sheep when the Shepherd is walking there tooJ
And supports them by his mighty armK
-
Oh my Redeemer wilt thou be with me thenL
And food for my journey provideB
Divide the dark waters of Jordan againL
And safe in thy bosom me hideB
-
Though wild beasts of the desert may roar long and loudB
And the billows of ocean rise highM
With thy rod and thy staff for my strength and supportB
I shall pass them in safety all byM
-
And having crossed Jordan on Canaan's bright shoreN
With what joy shall I take a surveyB
And reflect that the dangers of life are all o'erO
And with unclouded vision enjoy evermoreN
The bright sun of an endless dayB
