The Evening Of Life Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB BCBC DEFG BHIH JKJK LBLB BMBM NBONB P| As the shadows of evening around me are falling | A |
| With its dark sombre curtain outspread | B |
| And night's just at hand chilly night so appalling | A |
| And day's brilliant sunshine hath fled | B |
| - | |
| It is e'en so with me for the eve of my day | B |
| Has arrived yet I scarcely know how | C |
| Bright morn hath departed and noon passed away | B |
| And 'tis evening pale eve with me now | C |
| - | |
| Oh where are the friends who in life's early morn | D |
| With me did their journey commence | E |
| Some are estranged while some few still remain | F |
| And others departed long since | G |
| - | |
| And when I too like them shall be summoned away | B |
| And the shadows of death on me fall | H |
| Be thou the Great Shepherd of Israel but near | I |
| My Saviour my God and my all | H |
| - | |
| And though the dark valley we all must pass through | J |
| Yet surely no evil can harm | K |
| The sheep when the Shepherd is walking there too | J |
| And supports them by his mighty arm | K |
| - | |
| Oh my Redeemer wilt thou be with me then | L |
| And food for my journey provide | B |
| Divide the dark waters of Jordan again | L |
| And safe in thy bosom me hide | B |
| - | |
| Though wild beasts of the desert may roar long and loud | B |
| And the billows of ocean rise high | M |
| With thy rod and thy staff for my strength and support | B |
| I shall pass them in safety all by | M |
| - | |
| And having crossed Jordan on Canaan's bright shore | N |
| With what joy shall I take a survey | B |
| And reflect that the dangers of life are all o'er | O |
| And with unclouded vision enjoy evermore | N |
| The bright sun of an endless day | B |
