A fair young girl was to the altar ledA
By him she loved the chosen of her heartB
And words of solemn import there were saidA
And mutual vows were pledged till death should partB
-
But life was young and death a great way offC
At least it seemed so then on that bright mornD
And they no doubt expected years of blissE
And in their path the rose without a thornD
-
Cherished from infancy with tenderest careF
A precious only daughter was the brideG
And when that young protector's arm she tookH
She for the first time left her parents' sideG
-
With all a woman's tender trustful heartB
She gave herself away to him she lovedI
Why should she not was he not all her ownJ
A choice by friends and parents too approvedK
-
How rapidly with him the days now flyL
With him the partner of her future lifeM
Happy and joyous as a child she'd beenN
Happy as daughter happier still as wifeM
-
But ere eight months in quick succession passedO
One to each human heart a dreaded foeP
Entered her house and by a single strokeQ
Blasted her hopes and laid her idol lowP
-
Three months of bitter anguish was enduredR
But hope again revived and she was blestS
When pressing to her heart a darling childT
Whose little head she pillowed on her breastS
-
Not long is she permitted to enjoyU
This sweetest bud of promise to her givenV
Short as an angel's visit was its stayW
When God who gave it took it up to heavenV
-
Ah what a contrast one short year presentsX
Replete with happiness replete with woeP
In that brief space a maiden called and wifeM
Widow and mother written childless tooY
-
Surely my friend I need not say to theeZ
Look not to earth for what it can't bestowP
'Tis at the best a frail and brittle reedA2
Which trusting for support will pierce thee throughY
-
Then let us look above this fleeting earthB2
To heaven and heavenly joys direct our eyesC2
No lasting happiness this world affordsD2
He builds too low who builds below the skiesC2
