| At least it seemed so then on that bright morn | D |
| And they no doubt expected years of bliss | E |
| And in their path the rose without a thorn | D |

| Cherished from infancy with tenderest care | F |
| A precious only daughter was the bride | G |
| And when that young protector's arm she took | H |
| She for the first time left her parents' side | G |

| With all a woman's tender trustful heart | B |
| She gave herself away to him she loved | I |
| Why should she not was he not all her own | J |
| A choice by friends and parents too approved | K |

| How rapidly with him the days now fly | L |
| With him the partner of her future life | M |
| Happy and joyous as a child she'd been | N |
| Happy as daughter happier still as wife | M |

| But ere eight months in quick succession passed | O |
| One to each human heart a dreaded foe | P |
| Entered her house and by a single stroke | Q |
| Blasted her hopes and laid her idol low | P |

| Three months of bitter anguish was endured | R |
| But hope again revived and she was blest | S |
| When pressing to her heart a darling child | T |
| Whose little head she pillowed on her breast | S |
