I here engageA
Upon this pageA
A picture to portrayB
Of two of an ageA
Yet neither a sageA
But right honest hearts have theyB
Each loves to playB
And have his own wayB
Yet I'm happy to sayB
They quarrel if ever but seldomC
Though competent quiteD
To maintain their own rightD
And even to fightD
Yet peace to their bosom is welcomeC
Both go to schoolE
And learn by ruleE
That in neither a dunce we may findF
Both read and spellG
And like it wellG
Thus with pleasure is profit combinedF
One's eyes are blackH
The other's blueI
They both have honest hearts and trueI
And love each other dearlyJ
One's father is brotherK
To the other one's motherK
So cousins german are they most clearlyJ
Each has a fatherK
And each has a motherK
And both do dearly love himL
But neither a sisterK
And neither a brotherK
To play with or to plague himL
And here I proposeM
Ere I come to a closeN
A little advice to giveO
To which if they heedP
They'll be better indeedP
And happier as long as they liveQ
Be sure to mindF
Your parents kindF
And do nothing to vex or tease themR
But through each dayB
Heed what they sayB
And strive to obey and please themR
Take not in vainS
God's holy nameT
Do not workU
Do not playB
On God's holy dayB
Nor from church stay awayB
Always bear it in mindF
To be gentle and kindF
And friends you will findF
And hearts to you bindF
I am sure I may venture to sayB
And when you're menV
Who sees you thenV
I hope in you models will seeJ
Of good and greatW
In Church and StateW
Whose lips with your lives agreeJ
