The Solitary Lament Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEE FFGGHHII IJHHKKLM HHIINOPP JJQQHHRR

The terrors of night have fallen on meA
The shadow of forms no longer I seeA
Eyes that have lingered on objects of lightB
Are now ever closed by day and by nightB
As time passes on I shed bitter tearsC
Wearily waiting these many long yearsD
Oftentimes waking from dreaming to findE
Nothing but gloom I am helpless and blindE
-
Of all earthly joys I am nearly bereftF
No pleasure of friends alone I am leftF
Kind hearts there are some though many alasG
Send a curious gaze toward me as they passG
One visitor daily a small ray of sunH
Just crossing my face it gladly doth runH
Bringing me news of the weather and timeI
And memories sweet of my own sunny climeI
-
They've taken my children away from their homeI
For care to them mother love is unknownJ
Their smiles and caresses to strangers are givenH
Alone in despair my fond heart is rivenH
O tell me kind angels shall I ever recoverK
To care for my children and heart broken motherK
While sadly I'm thinking of joys that have passedL
For days like my childhood in mercy I askM
-
How strange seems the quiet how foreign to oneH
Who reveled in beauty in pleasure and funH
As healthy and happy and merry as MayI
School books in hand I would hasten awayI
But listen What noises are those that I hearN
In the silence strange fancies awaken my fearO
And terrible phantoms of lunatics tryP
To glare o'er my couch and stifle my cryP
-
Welcome O Death do not leave me aloneJ
The future's unkind and hopes are all flownJ
In pain and in anguish my sorrow untoldQ
In age most a child yet in trouble grown oldQ
But God in His mercy one bright hope has givenH
Saviour to love and rest in dear HeavenH
There beautiful music and many things fairR
While voices of loved ones with song fill the airR
