On starlit height distant 'gainst horizon brightA
The Way of the Cross is outlinedB
By rocky steeps barren 'mid dangers unseenC
A narrow straight pathway doth windB
The sighing winds whisper of sacrifice toilD
And foot prints where pilgrims have trodE
Are crimson and tear washed where fissures are rentF
Wierd spirits of pain flit abroadG
-
A woman in sadness e'er watching this CrossH
Revealed in the morn of her lifeI
To travel o'er mountains alone through the stormJ
Means suffering and wearisome strifeI
'Mid pitfalls of doubtings and barriers highK
A valley called Vale of DelightA
Appears to her vision its beauties aglowL
With charms all alluring to sightA
-
Its meadows are tinted by golden hued lightsM
Unruffled its waters they chimeN
With harmonic singing while world wedded danceO
To musical rhythm and timeN
Red wine floweth freely with jingle of goldP
Jests mingle with laughter so gayQ
In Vale of Delight merry banquets and ballsR
Turn quickly the night into dayQ
-
The woman enraptured by dazzling displayQ
Yet holiness loveth and rightA
Back to the mountains she turneth her gazeS
There gleaming through mists beyond heightsM
Is glittering sheen of sparkling gemmed spiresT
A city of pearls beyond steepsT
But Calvary's Cross is path to its gateU
In sorrow she bitterly weepsT
-
In Vale of Delight seems earthly reposeT
And freedom from sorrow and painV
But pleadings of Jesus appeal to her heartW
In City of Lovelight doth reignV
His spirit so gentle o'er floweth with goodX
With kindliest tokens of loveY
The promise He giveth beyond vale of tearsT
Eternal abiding aboveY
-
To City of Holies she pleads with her LordZ
Help me in Thy mercy come inA2
Keep me from slipping o'er precipice deepB2
Laid for all in Valley of SinA2
Then journey to Starworld she finds full of thornsT
Sore pressed on the way by life's careC2
Till crieth she Saviour though saving Thy CrossT
Its burdens most grievous to bearC2
-
Life's duties demanding a sacrificed heartW
By trials hedged on either sideD2
Yet beauty of holies celestial with loveY
I long for thee what e'er betideD2
Her Saviour upholding foes dropping by wayQ
She trustingly presses her flightA
When sin all surrendered and laid upon CrossT
In peace with Christ enters LovelightA
