Glad boyish voices with merriment ringA
Two children with nought as gayly they singA
Of burdensome care their hearts as the birdB
To mountains oft' soar in freedom unstirredB
By future and what it furtively bringsC
Of pleasures or grief or life's bitter stingsC
The shadowed cross e'er failing to seeD
Thoughts flitting as bubbles on oft' changing seaD
-
From childhood spring youths with fair open browsE
Surrounded by all earth ever allowsE
Of conquering fame while life's deepest charmF
They sip from the fount of love's laden balmG
Of treasures untold to reap they aspireH
At vanity's fair rich harvests acquireI
Over this vision in mystery tossJ
A shadow that lifts unveiling a crossJ
-
In wonder they gaze at spectre so whiteB
As softly it beams in silvery lightB
'Mid silence it pleads they pause all aghastB
'Tis Jesus who calls His Cross in their pathK
Cross misty with tears with sacrifice fraughtB
While deeply inlaid with sorrows 'tis wroughtB
Divided from world by widening streamL
It leadeth through pain earth's conquests a gleamL
-
Shall I Shall I not Self questioned each youthM
Take up this Cross all laden with truthM
Shall lingering fear of poverty's valeN
The scoffing of friends if honors should failN
Bar us accepting a promise of loveO
By way of the Cross the gift from aboveO
Silently each life's curtain unfurledB
One bends to his Cross one flees to the worldB
-
Two pictures are drawn on life's beaten pageP
The faces once seen have ripened with ageP
The purpose of each their loved ones a dowerQ
And conflicts of life are wielding with powerI
Surfeited was one with all earthly lustsJ
His soul he'ed surrendered to prince of earth's trustsJ
One bearing a Cross e'er toiling for rightB
Walking with Jesus in spirit waxed brightB
-
There's pictured again in oft' changing sceneR
A tottering form appears in the dreamL
Furrowed his face from indulgence in sinsJ
Eternity lost to gold fondly clingsJ
He'd bartered his soul a few years to liveS
And sinking the grave has nothing to giveT
Unloved and embittered e'en cross once refusedB
Gleamed sadly through mists then slowly withdrewU
-
Our vision once more life's curtain unrolledB
And walked beside one with jewels untoldB
Unfurrowed his brow though whitened the hairV
Eternally blest when freed earthly careV
The cross he'd accepted oft' riven in tearsJ
And humble his walk through life's fleeting yearsJ
Had given sweet peace as only those knowW
Who've tasted of wealth Christs' love doth bestowW
