Whoe'er thou art whose path in summer liesA
Through yonder village turn thee where the groveB
Of branching oaks a rural palace oldC
Imbosoms there dwells Albert generous lordD
Of all the harvest round and onward thenceE
A low plain chapel fronts the morning lightF
Fast by a silent riv'let Humbly walkG
O stranger o'er the consecrated groundH
And on that verdant hilloc which thou see'stI
Beset with osiers let thy pious handJ
Sprinkle fresh water from the brook and strewK
Sweet smelling flowers for there doth Edmund restL
The learned shepherd for each rural artM
Fam'd and for songs harmonious and the woesN
Of ill requited love The faithless prideO
Of fair Matilda sank him to the graveP
In manhood's prime But soon did righteous heavenQ
With tears with sharp remorse and pining careR
Avenge her falsehood nor could all the goldC
And nuptial pomp which lur'd her plighted faithS
From Edmund to a loftier husband's homeT
Relieve her breaking heart or turn asideO
The strokes of death Go traveler relateU
The mournful story haply some fair maidV
May hold it in remembrance and be taughtW
That riches cannot pay for truth or loveX
