To The Author Of Memoirs Of The House Of Brandenburgh Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDEEFGHGH IIJKKJLMLMNNOPPOQRQR QQSTUS

The men renown'd as chiefs of human raceA
And born to lead in counsels or in armsB
Have seldom turn'd their feet from glory's chaceA
To dwell with books or court the Muse's charmsB
Yet to our eyes if haply time hath broughtC
Some genuine transcript of their calmer thoughtC
There still we own the wise the great or goodD
And C sar there and Xenophon are seenE
As clear in spirit and sublime of mienE
As on Pharsalian plains or by the Assyrian floodF
Say thou too Frederic was not this thy aimG
Thy vigils could the student's lamp ingageH
Except for this except that future fameG
Might read thy genius in the faithful pageH
-
That if hereafter envy shall presumeI
With words irreverent to inscribe thy tombI
And baser weeds upon thy palms to flingJ
That hence posterity may try thy reignK
Assert thy treaties and thy wars explainK
And view in native lights the hero and the kingJ
O evil foresight and pernicious careL
Wilt thou indeed abide by this appealM
Shall we the lessons of thy pen compareL
With private honor or with public zealM
Whence then at things divine those darts of scornN
Why are the woes which virtuous men have borneN
For sacred truth a prey to laughter givenO
What fiend what foe of nature urg'd thy armP
The Almighty of his scepter to disarmP
To push this earth adrift and leave it loose from heavenO
Ye godlike shades of legislators oldQ
Ye who made Rome victorious Athens wiseR
Ye first of mortals with the bless'd inroll'dQ
Say did not horror in your bosoms riseR
When thus by impious vanity impell'dQ
A magistrate a monarch ye beheldQ
Affronting civil order's holiest bandsS
Those bands which ye so labor'd to improveT
Those hopes and fears of justice from aboveU
Which tam'd the savage world to your divine commandsS
