Rhyme Scheme: A BCDEBEFGGHIHJAAKJKLM NOLOPQQRPRJULY | A |
- | |
From pompous life's dull masquerade | B |
From Pride's pursuits and Passion's war | C |
Far my Cordelia very far | D |
To thee and me may Heaven assign | E |
The silent pleasures of the shade | B |
The joys of peace unenvied though divine | E |
Safe in the calm embowering grove | F |
As thy own lovely brow serene | G |
Behold the world's fantastic scene | G |
What low pursuits employ the great | H |
What tinsel things their wishes move | I |
The forms of Fashion and the toys of State | H |
In vain are all Contentment's charms | J |
Her placid mien her cheerful eye | A |
For look Cordelia how they fly | A |
Allur'd by Power Applause or Gain | K |
They fly her kind protecting arms | J |
Ah blind to pleasure and in love with pain | K |
Turn and indulge a fairer view | L |
Smile on the joys which here conspire | M |
O joys harmonious as my lyre | N |
O prospect of enchanting things | O |
As ever slumbering poet knew | L |
When Love and Fancy wrapt him in their wings | O |
Here no rude storm of Passion blows | P |
But Sports and Smiles and Virtues play | Q |
Cheer'd by Affection's purest ray | Q |
The air still breathes Contentment's balm | R |
And the clear stream of Pleasure flows | P |
For ever active yet for ever calm | R |
