To Caleb Hardinge, M.d. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDDEFGEHIHIJJKLLM NONOPQRSSRTUTUVVOWWO JXJXYZXA2A2X

With sordid floods the wintry UrnA
Hath stain'd fair Richmond's level greenB
Her naked hill the Dryads mournC
No longer a poetic sceneB
No longer there thy raptur'd eyeD
The beauteous forms of earth or skyD
Surveys as in their Author's mindE
And London shelters from the yearF
Those whom thy social hours to shareG
The Attic Muse design'dE
From Hampstead's airy summit meH
Her guest the city shall beholdI
What day the people's stern decreeH
To unbelieving kings is toldI
When common men the dread of fameJ
Adjudg'd as one of evil nameJ
Before the sun the anointed headK
Then seek thou too the pious townL
With no unworthy cares to crownL
That evening's awful shadeM
Deem not I call thee to deploreN
The sacred martyr of the dayO
By fast and penitential loreN
To purge our ancient guilt awayO
For this on humble faith I restP
That still our advocate the priestQ
From heavenly wrath will save the landR
Nor ask what rites our pardon gainS
Nor how his potent sounds restrainS
The thunderer's lifted handR
No Hardinge peace to church and stateT
That evening let the Muse give lawU
While I anew the theme relateT
Which my first youth inamor'd sawU
Then will I oft explore thy thoughtV
What to reject which Locke hath taughtV
What to pursue in Virgil's layO
Till hope ascends to loftiest thingsW
Nor envies demagogues or kingsW
Their frail and vulgar swayO
-
O vers'd in all the human frameJ
Lead thou where'er my labor liesX
And English fancy's eager flameJ
To Grecian purity chastizeX
While hand in hand at wisdom's shrineY
Beauty with truth I strive to joinZ
And grave assent with glad applauseX
To paint the story of the soulA2
And Plato's visions to controlA2
By Verulamian lawsX
