Indeed my Phaedra if to findA
That wealth can female wishes gainB
Had e'er disturb'd your thoughtful mindA
Or cost one serious moment's painB
I should have said that all the rulesC
You learn'd of moralists and schoolsC
Were very useless very vainB
-
Yet I perhaps mistake the caseD
Say though with this heroic airE
Like one that holds a nobler chaceD
You try the tender loss to bearE
Does not your heart renounce your tongueF
Seems not my censure strangely wrongG
To count it such a slight affairE
When Hesper gilds the shaded skyH
Oft as you seek the well known groveI
Methinks I see you cast your eyeH
Back to the morning scenes of loveJ
Each pleasing word you heard her sayK
Her gentle look her graceful wayK
Again your struggling fancy moveL
Then tell me is your soul intireE
Does wisdom calmly hold her throneM
Then can you question each desireE
Bid this remain and that begoneM
No tear half starting from your eyeH
No kindling blush you know not whyH
No stealing sigh nor stifled groanM
Away with this unmanly moodN
See where the hoary churl appearsO
Whose hand hath seiz'd the favorite goodP
Which you reserv'd for happier yearsO
While side by side the blushing maidQ
Shrinks from his visage half afraidQ
Spite of the sickly joy she wearsR
Ye guardian powers of love and fameS
This chaste harmonious pair beholdT
And thus reward the generous flameS
Of all who barter vows for goldT
O bloom of youth o tender charmsU
Well buried in a dotard's armsU
O equal price of beauty soldT
Cease then to gaze with looks of loveJ
Bid her adieu the venal fairE
Unworthy she your bliss to proveL
Then wherefore should she prove your careE
No lay your myrtle garland downM
And let awhile the willow's crownM
With luckier omens bind your hairE
-
O just escap'd the faithless mainM
Though driven unwilling on the landV
To guide your favor'd steps againM
Behold your better genius standV
Where truth revolves her page divineM
Where virtue leads to honor's shrineM
Behold he lifts his awful handV
Fix but on these your ruling aimS
And time the sire of manly careE
Will fancy's dazzling colors tameS
A soberer dress will beauty wearE
Then shall esteem by knowledge ledW
Inthrone within your heart and headW
Some happier love some truer fairE
