Rhyme Scheme: AABCCBDDEFGE HHIJJIKKLMMNOOBHHB PPQRRQSSTUVT

Not for themselves did human kindA
Contrive the parts by heaven assign'dA
On life's wide scene to playB
Not Scipio's force nor C sar's skillC
Can conquer glory's arduous hillC
If fortune close the wayB
Yet still the self depending soulD
Though last and least in fortune's rollD
His proper sphere commandsE
And knows what nature's seal bestow'dF
And sees before the throne of GodG
The rank in which he standsE
-
Who train'd by laws the future ageH
Who rescu'd nations from the rageH
Of partial factious powerI
My heart with distant homage viewsJ
Content if thou celestial MuseJ
Did'st rule my natal hourI
Nor far beneath the hero's feetK
Nor from the legislator's seatK
Stands far remote the bardL
Though not with public terrors crown'dM
Yet wider shall his rule be foundM
More lasting his awardN
Lycurgus fashion'd Sparta's fameO
And Pompey to the Roman nameO
Gave universal swayB
Where are they Homer's reverend pageH
Holds empire to the thirtieth ageH
And tongues and climes obeyB
-
And thus when William's acts divineP
No longer shall from Bourbon's lineP
Draw one vindictive vowQ
When Sidney shall with Cato restR
And Russel move the patriot's breastR
No more than Brutus nowQ
Yet then shall Shakespeare's powerful artS
O'er every passion every heartS
Confirm his awful throneT
Tyrants shall bow before his lawsU
And freedom's glory's virtue's causeV
Their dread assertor ownT
