IA
Meek honor female shameB
O whither sweetest offspring of the skyA
From Albion dost thou flyA
Of Albion's daughters once the favorite fameB
O beauty's only friendC
Who giv'st her pleasing reverence to inspireD
Who selfish bold desireE
Dost to esteem and dear affection turnF
Alas of thee forlornG
What joy what praise what hope can life pretendC
-
IIA
Behold our youths in vainH
Concerning nuptial happiness inquireD
Our maids no more aspireD
The arts of bashful Hymen to attainH
But with triumphant eyesI
And cheeks impassive as they move alongJ
Ask homage of the throngJ
The lover swears that in a harlot's armsK
Are found the self same charmsK
And worthless and deserted lives and diesI
-
IIIA
Behold unbless'd at homeL
The father of the cheerless household mournsM
The night in vain returnsN
For love and glad content at distance roamL
While she in whom his mindO
Seeks refuge from the day's dull task of caresP
To meet him she preparesP
Through noise and spleen and all the gamester's artQ
A listless harrass'd heartQ
Where not one tender thought can welcome findO

'Twas thus along the shoreS
Of Thames Britannia's guardian Genius heardT
From many a tongue preferr'dT
Of strife and grief the fond invective loreS
At which the queen divineU
Indignant with her adamantine spearV
Like thunder sounding nearV
Smote the red cross upon her silver shieldW
And thus her wrath reveal'dW
I watch'd her awful words and made them mineU
