From none more pleasing aid we findB
Than from the genuine love of praiseC

Nor any partial private endD
Such reverence to the public bearsE
Nor any passion virtue's friendD
So like to virtue's self appearsF

For who in glory can delightG
Without delight in glorious deedsH
What man a charming voice can slightG
Who courts the echo that succeedsH

But not the echo on the voiceJ
More than on virtue praise dependsK
To which of course it's real priceL
The judgment of the praiser lendsK

If praise then with religious aweM
From the sole perfect judge be soughtN
A nobler aim a purer lawO
Nor priest nor bard nor sage hath taughtN

With which in character the sameP
Tho' in an humbler sphere it liesQ
I count that soul of human fameP
The suffrage of the good and wiseQ
