Ode To The Country Gentlemen Of England Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDEED FGFGHHIJJI KLKLMNOPPO QRQSTTIPPI

Thou heedless Albion what alas the whileA
Dost thou presume O inexpert in armsB
Yet vain of freedom how dost thou beguileA
With dreams of hope these near and loud alarmsB
Thy splendid home thy plan of laws renown'dC
The praise and envy of the nations roundC
What care hast thou to guard from fortune's swayD
Amid the storms of war how soon may allE
The lofty pile from its foundations fallE
Of ages the proud toil the ruin of a dayD
-
No thou art rich thy streams and fertile valesF
Add industry's wise gifts to nature's storeG
And every port is crowded with thy sailsF
And every wave throws treasure on thy shoreG
What boots it If luxurious plenty charmH
Thy selfish heart from glory if thy armH
Shrink at the frowns of danger and of painI
Those gifts that treasure is no longer thineJ
Oh rather far be poor Thy gold will shineJ
Tempting the eye of force and deck thee to thy baneI
-
But what hath force or war to do with theeK
Girt by the azure tide and thron'd sublimeL
Amid thy floating bulwarks thou canst seeK
With scorn the fury of each hostile climeL
Dash'd ere it reach thee Sacred from the foeM
Art thy fair fields athwart thy guardian prowN
No bold invader's foot shall tempt the strandO
Yet say my country will the waves and windP
Obey thee Hast thou all thy hopes resign'dP
To the sky's fickle faith the pilot's wavering handO
-
Nor yet be aw'd nor yet your task disownQ
Though war's proud votaries look on severeR
Though secrets taught erewhile to them aloneQ
They deem profan'd by your intruding earS
Let them in vain your martial hope to quellT
Of new refinements fiercer weapons tellT
And mock the old simplicity in vainI
To the time's warfare simple or refin'dP
The time itself adapts the warrior's mindP
And equal prowess still shall equal palms obtainI
