IA
Whither did my fancy strayB
By what magic drawn awayB
Have I left my studious themeC
From this philosophic pageD
From the problems of the sageD
Wandering thro' a pleasing dreamC
-
IIA
'Tis in vain alas i findE
Much in vain my zealous mindE
Would to learned wisdom's throneF
Dedicate each thoughtful hourG
Nature bids a softer powerG
Claim some minutes for his ownF
-
IIIA
Let the busy or the wiseH
View him with contemptuous eyesH
Love is native to the heartI
Guide its wishes as you willJ
Without Love you'll find it stillJ
Void in one essential partI
-
IVK
Me though no peculiar fairL
Touches with a lover's careL
Though the pride of my desireG
Asks immortal friendship's nameM
Asks the palm of honest fameM
And the old heroic lyreN
-
VK
Though the day have smoothly goneO
Or to letter'd leisure knownF
Or in social duty spentP
Yet at eve my lonely breastQ
Seeks in vain for perfect restQ
Languishes for true contentP
