Science thou fair effusive ray	A
From the great source of mental day	A
Free generous and refin'd	B
Descend with all thy treasures fraught	C
Illumine each bewilder'd thought	C
And bless my lab'ring mind	B

But first with thy resistless light	D
Disperse those phantoms from my sight	D
Those mimic shades of thee	E
The scholiast's learning sophist's cant	F
The visionary bigot's rant	F
The monk's philosophy	E

O let thy powerful charms impart	G
The patient head the candid heart	G
Devoted to thy sway	A
Which no weak passions e'er mislead	H
Which still with dauntless steps proceed	H
Where Reason points the way	A

Give me to learn each secret cause	I
Let number's figure's motion's laws	J
Reveal'd before me stand	K
These to great Nature's scenes apply	L
And round the globe and thro' the sky	L
Disclose her working hand	K

Next to thy nobler search resign'd	B
The busy restless human mind	B
Thro' ev'ry maze pursue	M
Detect Perception where it lies	N
Catch the ideas as they rise	N
And all their changes view	M

Say from what simple springs began	O
The vast ambitious thoughts of man	O
Which range beyond control	P
Which seek Eternity to trace	Q
Dive thro' th' infinity of space	Q
And strain to grasp the whole	P

Her secret stores let Memory tell	R
Bid Fancy quit her fairy cell	R
In all her colours drest	B
While prompt her sallies to control	P
Reason the judge recalls the soul	P
To Truth's severest test	B

Then launch thro' Being's wide extent	B
Let the fair scale with just ascent	B
And cautious steps be trod	B
And from the dead corporeal mass	S
Thro' each progressive order pass	S
To Instinct Reason God	B

There Science veil thy daring eye	L
Nor dive too deep nor soar too high	L
In that divine abyss	T
To Faith content thy beams to lend	B
Her hopes t' assure her steps befriend	B
And light her way to bliss	T

Then downwards take thy flight agen	O
Mix with the policies of men	O
And social nature's ties	N
The plan the genius of each state	B
Its interest and its pow'rs relate	B
Its fortunes and its rise	N

Thro' private life pursue thy course	U
Trace every action to its source	U
And means and motives weigh	A
Put tempers passions in the scale	V
Mark what degrees in each prevail	V
And fix the doubtful sway	A

That last best effort of thy skill	W
To form the life and rule the will	W
Propitious pow'r impart	B
Teach me to cool my passion's fires	X
Make me the judge of my desires	X
The master of my heart	B

Raise me above the vulgar's breath	Y
Pursuit of fortune fear of death	Y
And all in life that's mean	O
Still true to reason be my plan	O
Still let my action speak the man	O
Thro' every various scene	O

Hail queen of manners light of truth	Z
Hail charm of age and guide of youth	Z
Sweet refuge of distress	A2
In business thou exact polite	B
Thou giv'st Retirement its delight	B
Prosperity its grace	Q
