Science thou fair effusive rayA
From the great source of mental dayA
Free generous and refin'dB
Descend with all thy treasures fraughtC
Illumine each bewilder'd thoughtC
And bless my lab'ring mindB
-
But first with thy resistless lightD
Disperse those phantoms from my sightD
Those mimic shades of theeE
The scholiast's learning sophist's cantF
The visionary bigot's rantF
The monk's philosophyE
-
O let thy powerful charms impartG
The patient head the candid heartG
Devoted to thy swayA
Which no weak passions e'er misleadH
Which still with dauntless steps proceedH
Where Reason points the wayA
-
Give me to learn each secret causeI
Let number's figure's motion's lawsJ
Reveal'd before me standK
These to great Nature's scenes applyL
And round the globe and thro' the skyL
Disclose her working handK
-
Next to thy nobler search resign'dB
The busy restless human mindB
Thro' ev'ry maze pursueM
Detect Perception where it liesN
Catch the ideas as they riseN
And all their changes viewM
-
Say from what simple springs beganO
The vast ambitious thoughts of manO
Which range beyond controlP
Which seek Eternity to traceQ
Dive thro' th' infinity of spaceQ
And strain to grasp the wholeP
-
Her secret stores let Memory tellR
Bid Fancy quit her fairy cellR
In all her colours drestB
While prompt her sallies to controlP
Reason the judge recalls the soulP
To Truth's severest testB
-
Then launch thro' Being's wide extentB
Let the fair scale with just ascentB
And cautious steps be trodB
And from the dead corporeal massS
Thro' each progressive order passS
To Instinct Reason GodB
-
There Science veil thy daring eyeL
Nor dive too deep nor soar too highL
In that divine abyssT
To Faith content thy beams to lendB
Her hopes t' assure her steps befriendB
And light her way to blissT
-
Then downwards take thy flight agenO
Mix with the policies of menO
And social nature's tiesN
The plan the genius of each stateB
Its interest and its pow'rs relateB
Its fortunes and its riseN
-
Thro' private life pursue thy courseU
Trace every action to its sourceU
And means and motives weighA
Put tempers passions in the scaleV
Mark what degrees in each prevailV
And fix the doubtful swayA
-
That last best effort of thy skillW
To form the life and rule the willW
Propitious pow'r impartB
Teach me to cool my passion's firesX
Make me the judge of my desiresX
The master of my heartB
-
Raise me above the vulgar's breathY
Pursuit of fortune fear of deathY
And all in life that's meanO
Still true to reason be my planO
Still let my action speak the manO
Thro' every various sceneO
-
Hail queen of manners light of truthZ
Hail charm of age and guide of youthZ
Sweet refuge of distressA2
In business thou exact politeB
Thou giv'st Retirement its delightB
Prosperity its graceQ
-
Of wealth pow'r freedom thou the causeI
Foundress of order cities lawsJ
Of arts inventress thouB2
Without thee what were human kindB
How vast their wants their thoughts how blindB
Their joys how mean how fewM
-
Sun of the soul thy beams unveilV
Let others spread the daring sailV
On Fortune's faithless seaE
While undeluded happier IL
From the vain tumult timely flyL
And sit in peace with theeE
