Oh fly 'tis dire Suspicion's mienA
And meditating plagues unseenA
The sorceress hither bendsB
Behold her torch in gall imbruedC
Behold her garment drops with bloodC
Of lovers and of friendsB
Fly far Already in your eyesD
I see a pale suffusion riseD
And soon through every veinE
Soon will her secret venom spreadC
And all your heart and all your headC
Imbibe the potent stainE
Then many a demon will she raiseF
To vex your sleep to haunt your waysF
While gleams of lost delightC
Raise the dark tempest of the brainE
As lightning shines across the mainE
Through whirlwinds and through nightC
No more can faith or candor moveG
But each ingenuous deed of loveH
Which reason would applaudC
Now smiling o'er her dark distressI
Fancy malignant strives to dressI
Like injury and fraudC
-
Farewell to virtue's peaceful timesJ
Soon will you stoop to act the crimesJ
Which thus you stoop to fearK
Guilt follows guilt and where the trainE
Begins with wrongs of such a stainE
What horrors form the rearK
'Tis thus to work her baleful powerL
Suspicion waits the sullen hourL
Of fretfulness and strifeM
When care the infirmer bosom wringsJ
Or Eurus waves his murky wingsJ
To damp the seats of lifeM
But come forsake the scene unbless'dC
Which first beheld your faithful breastC
To groundless fears a preyN
Come where with my prevailing lyreO
The skies the streams the groves conspireL
To charm your doubts awayN
-
Thron'd in the sun's descending carP
What power unseen diffuseth farP
This tenderness of mindC
What genius smiles on yonder floodC
What god in whispers from the woodC
Bids every thought be kindC
O thou whate'er thy awful nameQ
Whose wisdom our untoward frameQ
With social love restrainsJ
Thou who by fair affection's tiesJ
Giv'st us to double all our joysJ
And half disarm our painsJ
Let universal candor stillR
Clear as yon heaven reflecting rillR
Preserve my open mindC
Nor this nor that man's crooked waysJ
One sordid doubt within me raiseJ
To injure human kindC
