bone and sinewA
belly and breasts elbows and liver and toeB
She is manufactured like a sports sedanA
She is retooled refitted and redesignedC
every decadeD
Cecile had been seduction itself in collegeE
She wriggled through bars like a satin eelF
her hips and ass promising her mouth pursedG
in the dark red lipstick of desireH
-
She visited in ' still wearing skirtsI
tight to the knees dark red lipstickJ
while I danced through Manhattan in mini skirtK
lipstick pale as apricot milkL
hair loose as a horse's mane Oh dearM
I thought in my superiority of the momentN
whatever has happened to poor CecileF
She was out of fashion out of the gameO
disqualified disdained disP
membered from the club of desireH
-
Look at pictures in French fashionA
magazines of the th centuryQ
century of the ultimate ladyQ
fantasy wrought of silk and corsetingL
Paniers bring her hips out three feetR
each way while the waist is pinchedS
and the belly flattened under woodT
The breasts are stuffed up and outU
offered like apples in a bowlV
The tiny foot is encased in a slipperH
never meant for walkingL
On top is a grandiose headacheW
hair like a museum piece dailyQ
ornamented with ribbons vasesX
grottoes mountains frigates in fullY
sail balloons baboons the fancyQ
of a hairdresser turned looseZ
The hats were rococo wedding cakesA2
that would dim the Las Vegas stripB2
Here is a woman forced into shapeC2
rigid exoskeleton torturing fleshD2
a woman made of painA
-
How superior we are now see the modern womanA
thin as a blade of scissorsE2
She runs on a treadmill every morningL
fits herself into machines of weightsF2
and pulleys to heave and gruntN
an image in her mind she can neverH
approximate a body of rosyQ
glass that never wrinklesG2
never grows never fades SheQ
sits at the table closing her eyes to foodH2
hungry always hungryQ
a woman made of painA
-
A cat or dog approaches anotherH
they sniff noses They sniff assesX
They bristle or lick They fallI2
in love as often as we doJ2
as passionately But they fallI2
in love or lust with furry fleshD2
not hoop skirts or push up brasK2
rib removal or liposuctionA
It is not for male or female dogsL2
that poodles are clippedM2
to topiary hedgesN2
-
If only we could like each other rawO2
If only we could love ourselvesP2
like healthy babies burbling in our armsQ2
If only we were not programmed and reprogrammedR2
to need what is sold usS2
Why should we want to live inside adsT2
Why should we want to scourge our softnessS2
to straight lines like a Mondrian paintingL
Why should we punish each other with scornA
as if to have a large assK2
were worse than being greedy or meanA
-
When will women not be compelledU2
to view their bodies as science projectsV2
gardens to be weededW2
dogs to be trainedX2
When will a woman ceaseY2
to be made of painA
